In my experience as a reader, parent, and grandparent, children take from books what they are ready to take. I think this is true when they're young listeners, and I think it's true when they are reading independently. (I think it's true of adults, too. My response to a book at age 75 is not what it was at age 12 or 45.)So the fears some parents have about 'exposing' their children to certain books strikes me as misguided and unnecessary. Nor should they be deciding for me and my children.

Nobody can tell me that Ollie doesn't get excited when I buy him a new toy. He got groomed a couple of days ago and while he was suffering the indignities of a bath and haircut, I stopped at the local pet shop and got him this red toy. He was delighted! He has a similar one in blue but he long ago ripped the tassels off and it's been missing for the past week. He doesn't get new toys often--I'm not Bill Gates, you know!--and when he does, it's a big deal. Merry Xmas, Ollie!#dogsofmastodon

Well, I didn't expect to read that Trump was a future Diaper Dictator when I took a look at @Laffy a few minutes ago. To cleanse my brain, I remembered a photo I took of Ollie this morning. Ollie is content and also tired. His best friend Oscar returned today from a visit to our neighbor's new granddaughter, and he and Ollie celebrated by racing and wrestling for the better part of 30 minutes. These golden doodles LOVE chilly weather. Pumps up their energy levels 300%. #dogsofmastodon

@IdahoLark Put 10,000 baking potatoes in a giant sack. Zap it with space lasers as it drops down and then share baked potatoes with the crowd. A warm treat to munch in the new year.Was it MTG who believed in space lasers? If so, she can be in charge of the arrangements.

He is killing time till 2pm when we will go down the street to play with Oscar, Ollie's golden doodle best friend. It's nice and cold so they will have a blast galloping and wrestling and enjoying the doodle life. Ollie went to the vet for his annual checkup yesterday. He is fine but my wallet needs urgent care. 😬 #DogsOfMastodon

Many things amaze me. One is the sheer number of horrible people who keep grabbing the news. They're everywhere! Some focus on shooting pets, others on grifting, still others on destroying our country, and lots of them multitask--Look at me! I can shoot my puppy AND tell lies AND attack democracy BEFORE BREAKFAST!It gets me down, it really does. Life is tough even when we're nice to each other. No need to be greedy selfish monsters. Having heard testimony from several witnesses about what a cheapskate trump is, how he squeezes every penny, blah blah, I'm quite surprised he hasn't asked Putin to send him some Russian uniforms to wear. trump would want to be a general, no doubt, but Putin wouldn't care. It's not like anyone would understand his orders if he gave any. And he'd save a bundle not buying those ugly plus size suits any more.
