So someone leaked a huge repo of source code and internal documents regarding the tech behind Great Firewall of China (GFW), and it is because Geedge Network, a for-profit company with ties to CCP state censorship czars were selling “censorship as a service” globally, to Central/South Asian governments as well as some African countries. More media reports were summarized here, as well as links to the full leaked source code are on public torrents.(People are yet to dig deep into the source repo for more troubling details, but revelation such as these are not too surprising, it matches user experience on the Chinese Internet, or as people here routinely joke: Chinese Intranet.)https://github.com/net4people/bbs/issues/519

It is a common pattern for security research labs to establish both civil/military connections as well as commercial partnerships. When you can do censorship so well and have battle tested your system against a billion people, for-profit export seems like a natural next step.Same for Israeli spyware companies.

Quick side note: Interseclab, the Brazilian forensics lab behind this analysis is at least partly funded by open tech fund.https://www.opentech.fund/projects-we-support/supported-projects/interseclab/OTF are in turn funded by the USAGM via US congressional approval.https://www.opentech.fund/about/about-our-funding/So of course they are under the same threat by Trump administration’s cut to USAGM funding.https://www.opentech.fund/news/open-technology-fund-files-lawsuit-to-contest-grant-termination-and-preserve-critical-mission/This is how right-wing politics fail to stop real state censorship.A profile of Interseclab here:http://takebackthetech.net/blog/stalkerware-and-targeted-digital-surveillance-what-it-and-what-strategies-can-we-use-look-out

A controversial question I want to ask the #gamedev fediverse:- Do you believe game industry is fundamentally a long tail market? As in, do you believe it is viable for smaller devs and publishers to not only exist, but generating more value in total at the tail end?Or do you believe the market lean towards oligopoly, where each genre will always have a few clear winners?

Steam Next Fes' genre tab is such a wild west of demos, hundreds of demos under a single subgenre...https://store.steampowered.com/sale/nextfest?tab=22

Also so many logos have that unique ChatGPT-generated font rendering and kerning it is a bit disheartening.

Also despite having decent CPU and GPU these days, macOS demos are almost exclusively 2d games, only a few 3d titles. At this point it is not a tooling problem, it is a perception problem.

@wildrikku I see your argument but I don't think one can seriously built for a platform without target hardwares, it is not viable for commercial releases.

Let me tell you the next step in age verification, as it happened in China:- simple age verification can be fooled too easily, so the natural evolution was to require government issued ID scan.- but then leaks happened, so government tightened regulations on ID storage, eventually only large providers are trusted to store those data.- now all services rely on them to provide ID verification, linking user profiles across multiple platforms.- total lost of privacy + cross-site tracking!

@dotstdy of course the ones responsible for implementing changes are largely funded by oligarchs, when things are finally ran by the people this might happen. (It is also unfortunate that a lot of “populist politicians” don’t really represent constituents.)

@dotstdy I do struggle to find a term to describe “politicians that actually represent voters” in English that isn’t made super negative by their opponents.

In this particular case perhaps what Apple did actually encourage Valve to go this route. Also surprising to see Valve doubles down on VR, when literally everyone is canceling VR to double down on chatbots.
