@futurebird @NatureMC @nev @frankashwood @CliftonR The EU just outlawed advertising disinfectants as "skin friendly", and I had to think of this post.https://ard.social/@tagesschau/112648956474384472

@futurebird TIL that knife beads are a thing.Wtf. "Every Day Carry" is already a cringe name to make jewelry acceptable for insecure dudes.

@futurebird Perhaps of interest: The German supreme court wears hats. (The only court in Germany to do so.)Robes are not owned by the judges. They are actually passed on to new judges with some retailoring. The supreme court can kick out judges for dishonorable conduct or when they are gulty of such a gross dereliction of duty that their stay in office is untenable.#Germany #law #SupremeCourt

@futurebird I like your positive outlook on people. And for a large part I agree - most people are decent. But personally, I learned to calculate with about 5% assholes. Folks who care more about what they can get away with than what is "right". Or who simply enjoy being mean. And they can impact the health and wellbeing of a society or organisation.I think the police is a great example. Yes, professional ethics matter. But you get them by enforcing the rules and punishing abuse.

@futurebird That sucks. And yes, there's also shitty behaviour by police officers in Germany. Some of it systemic (especially racism). But there's also strong professional ethics. Violence is not much of an issue. (Debate is mostly about whether police could have handled an armed mentally ill person better, or the application of pain grips when folks resist arrest). And the clearance rate for completed murder is at 96.3%.#PolizeiProblem

@futurebird For most common violence witnessed, I would go with drunken men. By far. Germans consume a third more alcohol than Americans. There are also no laws against public drinking, and no real closing hour.

@futurebird @jgordon @babelcarp With third party discord servers, they could report to the servers' admins who could then kick the person. But if it's just a circle of friends, they could easily create their own discord server. Then they would be the admins, and decide who to let onto the server, and also be able to kick them as needed. https://discord.com/blog/starting-your-first-discord-server

@futurebird I don't think going from religion to cult is the most likely development. It might be the one folks with a critical view on religion might gravitate towards. Yet in the European religious landscape, that's not what's happening. There are individuals who might switch from a more liberal faith to a more traditional one. A friend of mine did that, converting from Lutheranism to Catholicism. But that's not the trend. Religions here have become more ecumenical, not more culty.

@mekkaokereke @ricci I think I get why you are not ok with a movie where all Black characters are criminals, often violent ones. Yes, it's a racist clichΓ©.Personally, I think that's ok in the context of this movie. But that's easy to say for someone who's life is not negatively affected by this movie. What I disagree with is your perception of the messaging. Imho it's not "Don't be strong in a cruel world, just be nice"

@mekkaokereke @ricci What the movie imho does quite nicely is the construction and deconstruction of the "us vs them" worldview. It shows how the protagonists ends up with an "us vs them" worldview, how he gets dominated by it, how it fails him as there is not really an "us". How the protagonists overcomes it. And how the "us vs them" still ruins him as its an self-reinforcing dynamic. It's sometimes a bit heavyhanded, but imho it's quite consistent.

@mekkaokereke @ricci And yes, the movie takes artistic liberties to take the viewer on this ride and tell it in the length of a movie. Most nazis don't experience violence by PoC. They like this "defender" view, but in reality aren't under attack. And this "the violence gets back to you" is a nice story. In reality, the nazis don't have to worry about revenge attacks. (To me, this stands out more than the location of the revenge attack.)

@Alon I agree with your portrayal of AfD. And with the hesitancy to call racists racists and fascicts fascists. But when fighting right-wing extremism, there are further aspects to consider:- Reduced public investment increases extremist tendencies.https://www.econstor.eu/bitstream/10419/272875/1/1827171049.pdf- Extreme right groups rely heavily on a narrative of decay and doom. "Civilisation is failing, it's us vs them."So actually providing normalcy, stability and decent living helps. Not completely, see Denmark. But still

@spinni81 @futurebird I think the English word for a Ranzen or Tornister would be knapsack?https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schulranzenhttps://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/TornisterThough "Schulranzen" might be a German cultural thing. For some irrational reason, German schools don't have lockers. So students have to carry about 5.5 to 12 kg of books and stuff every day to and from school. But 5kg might be a bit too much to be healthy for primary school children. So parents get these super ergonomic knapsacks for 200+€.

@futurebird @spinni81 Thanks for this insight. Yes, this makes sense.Don't get me started on the lack of digitalisation in Germany. Or the sluggishness of the ministry controled German school system. πŸ˜’ Heck, we artificially create problems you couldn't even translate into other languages. (Like the decision to downgrade students who politely not only refer to male persons in their school-leaving exams. And ban such material from lessons.)https://www.dw.com/en/germanys-bavaria-sets-limits-on-gender-inclusive-language/a-68618217

@futurebird @discoursology Imho, the iPad is designed to take control away from users, and concentrate it at Apple. It's pretty much impossible to install your own software. You can't even copy your files from or to an USB stick. And so on. It's the opposite of empowering your students. The hardware is no better than other tablets *in that price range*.They are imho popular because they are easy to set-up and admin for non IT people: They are teacher friendly.
