“Unconditional” support for Israel’s actions in Gaza should terrify any clear-eyed Jew. The people expressing it are telling you that they can be convinced of the “necessity” of mass murder as long as it targets a group that doesn’t count. They are telling you that all it would take for them to support the mass murder of Jews is to change their mind about which side of the line you’re on.

@billiglarper @Aviva_Gary @KevinCarson1 About the "living peacefully without chasing anyone out", I suggest you read a few first-hand accounts from that time (1930s and 1940s well before 1948) of Europeans and newly-arrived Jews who reported on their uncomfortable encounters with armed Jewish settlers who were openly telling them that they were preparing to kill or force out the Arabs and claim the land. Of course those were largely non-native Zionists, not members of the long-term resident Jewish population.

@KevinCarson1 @billiglarper @Aviva_Gary Kevin, while I truly value the solidarity, this thread had taken on the character of a bilateral conversation where we, I dare say, we established some trust that we are both decent and reasonable people open to being convinced by facts and good arguments, in addition to both understanding the specifics of the Germsn context. What I’m saying is I don’t want @billiglarper feel like the terms of the debate have now changed and he‘s being ganged up on. But you are right, of course, subtantively, and thank you, truly.

@earthworm @aljazeera If we’re unlucky they’ll be easier to “count”, because that’s how you get from tens to hundreds of thousands in a few weeks…

@EU_Commission Shame on the EU for not speaking with one voice calling for a ceasefire. Shame.

@aljazeera On Israeli settlers “involved in undermining peace”? So the US means all of them, right?

@aljazeera Also, I immediately thought it was staged when the guy holding the weapon (above his head) wasn’t riddled with dozens of bullets. As if you would strip to surrender but hold on to your gun (??) and as if the Israeli soldiers would have let someone doing that live.

@faab64 War crime on top of war crime on top of war crime. The Western politicians still defending this are absolute scum.

You may have seen the viral video of the Israeli soldier bragging openly about killing Palestinian children and babies in #Gaza, to the merry amusement of the people he was speaking to. Neither the attitude nor the action is new or rare and it's certainly not a post-traumatic response to Oct 7. More than twenty years ago, I spent some time on a teaching English certification course together with an American evangelical couple. I was probably the only Palestinian they'd ever met. After a couple of weeks they worked up the courage to ask me about something that had been bothering them. They told me how an American-Israeli acquaintance of theirs back home had told them casually about having killed a young child when he was in the IDF “but so what, he was only an Arab". This couple were decent people who clearly suffered from the cognitive dissonance that encounter had triggered. I guess they were hoping to hear something from me that would help them make sense of it. But I'm not sure it helped when they saw that I was not even the slightest bit shocked or surprised to hear about their friend’s admission, because of course he did.#Palestine @palestine

@Penelope @LALegault To be fair, Americans are quite used to this perverse logic. Like George Zimmerman got to plead “self-defense” after violently confronting a minding-his-own-business Trayvon Martin.
