@Gina As I build up the infrastructure for my new company, I want to prioritize open source and free software too. Your experience will help provide a model for us, so thank you for sharing!

@Gina Places like Arcosanti (https://arcosanti.org/ ) or Zen Mountain Monastery (https://zmm.org/ ) could make for interesting comparables as you think it over.

@Gina Arcosanti isn’t a spiritual community, though it is a bit hippy. Environmental sustainability is one of their key values, but it’s also welcoming of most anything.

I’d been idly researching energy efficient appliances for my long term #decarbonization plan for my house—removing fossil fuel-powered systems and replacing them with electric. Key to the effort is a combination of photovoltaic solar power production and heat pumps. We installed a 4.69 kW solar power system 2.5 years ago and haven’t had to pay for electricity since!

We installed mini-split heat pumps for interior heating and cooling in two stages and they’ve worked great so far, but we haven’t relied exclusively on them for winter heating. That will change this year, because we completely removed our natural gas-fired boiler this summer.

@stux What is the time period for the above charts? It’s exciting to see the growth!

@jon It would be fascinating to build a lightweight ActivityPub app right in the browser, no need for a standalone server to sign up with…

@jon With security and privacy as core values, it would require a strong separation from any theoretical social app. But the value may be to simplify the onboard process (just create a profile right in your browser, no need to choose a server!), and to spread the computing load from servers hosted by volunteers, to each user’s desktop (a single-user instance inside each browser). Analogous, maybe, to BitTorrent, which of course is used already by PeerTube in the fediverse.
