@katherined @dsearls @webmink @methoddan I don't think we actually won, just saying. Sure, more people are using linux, kubernetes, etc, on the server, but the desktop battle isn't won yet. Windows is enshitifying, linux is getting kinda better, even though the fragmentation is still a thing, but very few people know of it. Just try using linux in most colidges or working in some companies, which use windows products, ms active directory, protocols to auto detect network printers, etc.

@webmink @katherined @dsearls @methoddan I just joined, I dk what went on earlier, but I was there for a bit of the discussion. No, the problem isn't that the hackyness of foss has been removed, or at least not in my opinion. I suppose, it does depend on what we mean by won indeed, hopefully the desktop battle would be won as well.

@TheFrenchGhosty @BrodieOnLinux that made my day, you know something is going down rapidly once someone puts that stuff in there. However, I do believe our software should also be funny sometimes, jokes and quirks are in the hacker culture for a reason, not pornography and such though obviously. Maybe more people should start putting easter eggs in their stuff? after all, what better way of showing people that we're not the corporates, we actually have some humor, than doing such things?

@TheFrenchGhosty @BrodieOnLinux as I said, obviously not that kind of thing. But I don't think we should stop encouraging *some* kinds of easter eggs, and I wish more devs would put those in there. Oof, luckily I didn't see those images, even though I was about to click the link in that issue.

@BrodieOnLinux @TheFrenchGhosty yeah, in my post I didn't say anything about allowing that stuff, in fact, I specifically stated the contrary. However, I tryed, perhaps unsuccessfully, to shift the topic for something more pleasent and funny, aka why doesn't more software have funny and inoffensive easter eggs and such surprises.

@BrodieOnLinux it's ai, it's written by AI! everyone knows that already, lol. In all seriousness, I suspect that's an ai generated text, so yeah, probably shouldn't give it much credit, you're already treating it with the right amount of seriousness imo

does anyone know how would I connect to a wifi appliance, for example a printer, a speaker, etc? do I have to join a network it makes? I had this question while someone around me talked about a whiteboard to which you connect with wifi in order to share something, and while the particular subject wasn't interesting to me, I was like, I actually don't know the answer to this, so I'm asking the fedi community. Hopefully I'll get an answer, though I have a feeling that it depends on the device.

with bluetooth devices, you just press on it and click pair, that's a different connection. However, if it makes a network and you have to connect to it, aren't you at risk of losing your internet connection entirely?

@OpenComputeDesign I wish there was no app involved, that one would just use the web interface provided by the wifi access point while connecting, like in hotels when you have to type your room number or whatever.

@OpenComputeDesign yeah, that works...hopefully it's not the same with stuff like speakers, printers, drones, etc

@Linux_in_a_Bit as long as the original project's team listens and considers that a good way of doing things, which is most often not the case

@Linux_in_a_Bit but even so, some cases require rewriting the project itself, because you simply have different goals. For example, I'm making odilia because I recognise the fact that any very good, very fast and lean screenreader has to be written in native code, and then I put memory-safe code on top of that, so of course it's rust, because I hate go. Why not fork orca? because writing it in the current way will never work at the levels of speed I know can be expected from efforts like mine.

@BrodieOnLinux O, I didn't know you're a programmer as well. Nice tool, though I dk if I should consider this malware, since it causes no permanent damage, leaks no files or any other data, doesn't make the user unable to operate their computer, doesn't do any visible or invisible harm, so yeah. A prank and a funny tool at best, meh humor at worst

@BrodieOnLinux hmm, that's better, make sure you also make a shell script to install it for the user just because, and make it launch when the graphical session is reached. Also, every minute of spinning, the program should wait for afew seconds, showing a popup on the screen, then closing it automatically and starting spinning again. Of course, the popup should say something to the effect of, x11 is broken, use wayland

@Linux_in_a_Bit @pluralistic @kyliu99 @marthawells you know what's absolutely ironic and interesting? that this is about the dangers of AI, the AI bubble and such, yet meetings about it are being held on zoom, something which begun selling video data to AI companies, or even training their own AI themselves. Either way, lame, just saying. I know I could just have not replied and went scroling by, but this is so ironic, I had to rofl

@Linux_in_a_Bit @pluralistic @kyliu99 @marthawells O well, then it's less bad, but in that case, I recommend as many people go in there by phone as possible, because then there'll be distortion and other such things, plus you don't need a zoom account, so you don't have to sign up to it, so technically you're not bound by their terms and they can't use your voice, distorted as it is, to train their ai, or sell it to data brokers for AI purposes, so basically everyone but them wins.
