@art I used to think I was just getting to the grumpy age where I was seeing things when I would complain that Christmas was starting sooner each year, but this year the stores put up decorations at the end of *September*. I mean, they lapped Thanksgiving AND Halloween. While it's tempting to just dunk on the obvious & blatant commercialism, I do also think this will result in kind of a holiday burn-out. We like the Christmas season, but we don't want it to be 5 months long...

@ParadeGrotesque I put crap on my todo list that I already did, just so I can check it off. This is a little bit for the history record, but mostly for the psychological value.

@ParadeGrotesque Sadly, I've found it to be the case that companies look to do layoffs right around Christmas. It's totally heartless and clearly just based on "getting the numbers right" before the fiscal year closes.

@art I've done this science and my outcome was that floppy disks (8" & 5.25" especially, but also 3.5") have shockingly bad lifespans even when stored as directed. I lost easily 95% of the data stored on floppy anything. That said, I suspect manufacturer plays a big part via media quality, so I'd love to hear your results.

So like 5 years ago I got up in the middle of the night to go to the restroom and suddenly got woozy and nauseous.I staggered back toward the bedroom to notify my wife and wound up collapsing in a heap, which -- as you might imagine -- scared the crap out of her. I laid there, semi-concious, shaking and sweating absolute *buckets*, thinking I was dying. She called 911 and off I went to the ER.Turns out this is called a 'vesovegal episode' among other names and is totally harmless.

It was a terrifying experience and the fact that it is both well-known and entirely harmless is mind boggling to me.These episodes happen for me about every year and a half now, and I had another one 2 days ago. Every time I'm shocked, both at how bad I feel during the episode and at how fine I am 30 minutes later.Apparently the cause is somewhat unknown, although standing up abruptly from a deep sleep is considered possible trigger.Has anyone else experienced these?

@cosullivan Yeah, I got a full cardiac workup and in the end was told, "Nope, heart looks great - please get out of that bed and let someone who needs it lie down".The official medical advice was to remain sitting on the side of the bed for 60 seconds after you sit up so you don't have a sharp falloff of blood pressure.Honestly, the reason this keeps happening every couple years is probably because that's how long it takes me to forget that advice and go back to my old habits. :P

@art I recently switched to a pair of Arteck bluetooth keyboards and Logitech mice. I was initially worried about latency or slow wakeup but in practice they are really responsive. No difference from wired that I can detect. This is Debian 9, for what that's worth.

@stux I was taught from a very young age that *all* rainbows were circles, but I think this might be the first time I've actually *seen* it.

Look, I don't love #systemd but the fact is it's *everywhere*. Has anyone written a comprehensive guide to using it?There's like 12 guides for how awful it is, and while those are both instructive and hilarious they aren't actually a guide to living with the beast.I'm a big fan of man pages but almost everyday I stumble on some new systemd ability or quirk, and I just feel a proper guide beyond the man pages would be a big assist.

Anyone using the official #mastodon app? If so, can you direct me to how I can either clear notifications or I guess mark them as read?Right now it just grows and grows and everything I've tried does nothing. My fallback plan is to clear them occasionally from the web interface but that seems... bonkers.
