@codewiz @1lyaP It’s not a good design. None of the new cards are. I wouldn’t run any of them in a case not the Fractal Design Torrent with bottom mounted fans blowing directly into the GPU. The power consumption alone for 40 series and 7000 series cards alone is a non-starter if you live in a warm climate.

@codewiz @1lyaP But hey does anyone make better looking GPUs than XFX right now? At least there’s that.

@killyourfm My gaming PC is the last Windows machine I have. It’s got an upgrade (or a replacement) due this year and I won’t be going back to Windows. Work PC running PopOS plays all my games just fine from a compatibility standpoint even though the hardware is substantially less powerful.

@lauren It’s not like his companies haven’t fired him before though. I just think he knows little enough about cars and rockets that he stays out of the way. He thinks he’s a real-ass software engineer when he’s anything but. And many many more people know way way more about building platforms like twitter than building cars and rockets so his idiocy is easily exposed. It’s why the “car” side of a Tesla is pretty great but the software side is VERY hit or miss.

@lauren Hot desking is beyond stupid and everyone will hate it. If they weren’t so incredibly pathetic and cowardly they’d just go full remote and eliminate the office space expense entirely.

@arstechnica I guess I am just never going to use Windows 11. IMO They couldn’t make a more repulsive operating system.

@lauren Over-prescribing the intelligence of ChatGPT is a big mistake.

@lauren OpenAI and Microsoft also want to make money so it’s not in their best interest to be generally transparent about how their large language models work and instead talk up their perceived intelligence.

@killyourfm There is something magical about those first two Foo Fighters albums where Dave played the vast majority of the parts.

@lauren I do have problems with the engineers. Very few of them have any ethics training to properly understand or push back on any problematic requirements. I have posted before about a large project that I worked on in the same vertical as ChatGPT that we eventually shut down because we were just stealing data to train our models with. Indiscriminate web scraping, doc collection, video transcription, images, etc.

@lauren I completely disagree. Absolving engineers of ethical responsibility is the “just following orders” excuse of building intelligent systems. Everyone in the chain has responsibility. I am not absolving the execs either.

@lauren Yeah when execs insert themselves into the engineering process is generally when I exit. It’s also a good way to build a side contracting business keeping their lights on and training your replacement(s) until they eventually file for bankruptcy and/or get acquired because that’s where it’s usually going anyway.

@evan Zuck seems pretty shredded but Elon’s a much larger man and has been drowning himself in Testosterone and HGH for a few years now the way only dudes born in the 70s seem to do. Honestly I would expect Elon to win handily but if the arena also could cave in during the middle of the fight that would be the best option for the world at large.

I feel like #Threads would be much better served being used as an on-ramp to the Fediverse for normies and we should be providing ample resources to migrate them out of #Meta ASAP instead of preemptively blocking Threads completely. People on #Mastodon seem overly skittish and reactionary when we can use Threads to poison pill all of Facebook.
