I highly recommend this documentary on the origins of free/open source software, if you havn't already seen it.My favourite section is where they demonise communism and praise the virtues of capitalism. As an anti-capitalist myself, I like how this highlights that the free software movement isn't necessarily anarchist/socialist in nature.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eluzi70O-P4#freesoftware #opensource #libresoftware

@cel I often like to compare the fediverse to email servers when explaining it to people, something I do have some personal experience in being an admin of.I still find it weird how email servers are just accepted as existing, but activityPub is demonised a lot despite working in a very similar way.Perhaps people don't know this, but it would be absolutely impossible to run an email server without making use of shared automated blocklists. As soon as an account on your mail server becomes visible enough on the rest of the internet, you'll get flooded with spam emails advertising penis pumps and "nigerian princes" asking for your bank info etc. if you don't.I've had problems where some email accounts on my server had gotten hacked by spambots, resulting in them sending out spam far and wide. The result of this was that our whole mail server got automatically added to a shared blocklist meaning that our users could no longer send emails out to hotmail addresses, gmail addresses and a bunch of other servers. In this situation, there is a process for getting off the blocklist. From what I remember, we disabled the accounts that were compromised, put in an appeal, and then got taken off. All of this happened automatically on their end, as far as I know. The block would have either been triggered by enough users flagging emails from our server as spam, or gaussian filters (that also get used) would have auto-detected the masses of spam coming from our server. That's just an example of me being an admin on a fairly small email server that wasn't open registration. I can't imagine how much work would need to go into moderating a server that is open registration.#FediBlockMeta
