@aral @vincib I signed it, but in France even parliamentary election results have no effect, so I can understand people not thinking that petitions will have any effect.

@nazgul @benjamin The joke is even older than that, there’s a very similar one written down by a 12th-century Persian poet https://archive.org/details/AnvarisDivanAPocketBookforAkbar

@linguistgoneforeign @headword Recently I tried to find a company that would host an email address with a non-ASCII domain name and a non-ASCII local part. After several attempts I gave up. The standards are there, the software supports them, but nobody cares enough to enable the support for that feature.

@jernej__s @linguistgoneforeign @headword Last time I checked, the standards only support Punycode for domain names, not for the local part of an email address. In the EAI standards (Email Address Internationalization), the local part can be in UTF-8, but in practice, email services don’t bother to support it (or aren’t even aware that it’s possible). https://www.afnic.fr/en/observatory-and-resources/expert-papers/hosting-a-domain-name-with-compound-characters/ Maybe @bortzmeyer knows if there’s been any progress on this recently?

@AmenZwa “Legibility research specific to digital text has shown that, like with printed text, line length can affect reading speed. If lines are too long it is difficult for the reader to quickly return to the start of the next line” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_length?wprov=sfti1#Electronic_text
