This report reads to me like a 66 page thesis on why @mozilla needed, and still needs, Firefox OS. @MitchellBaker https://research.mozilla.org/browser-competition/

That's not to excuse the behaviour of the incumbents, who should clean up their act. But if @mozilla are ever to be truly independent, they can't afford to play by their rules. It's either wait for governments around the world to legislate, or disrupt through innovation.

In 1992 AOL announced their "electronic mail gateway", allowing users to send and receive mail to "a wide variety of commercial and educational e-mail systems", without needing a separate account. https://www.technologizer.com/2010/05/24/aol-anniversary/How long until Twitter joins the "fediverse"?

@penguin42 Bytemark has been rubbish since it became IOMart. I miss Bytemark. I have considered switching to Mythic Beasts but I noticed they don't let you upgrade a virtual server yourself, you have to email them. How has your experience been so far?

Huge if true. Amazon working on a "web-first" operating system codenamed Vega to eventually replace Android on all of its devices, starting with FireTV. https://www.lowpass.cc/p/amazon-vega-os-fire-tv-androidFrom accounts it sounds more like JS-first (React Native) than Web-first, but I'd love to know more.

A fascinating discussion in the second half of this episode where @jaffathecake and @surma share their views on the differing ideologies of the main browser vendors, and how they have evolved over time.Particularly interesting (for me) was the influence of Firefox OS.https://offthemainthread.tech/episode/webgpu-and-browser-ideologies/

@jaffathecake @surma In a particular stroke of genius, the segment is cleverly hidden away after a long technical discussion about WebGPU, and a whole story about doing a poo in a pub, so only the most dedicated of web fans are rewarded with the spicy bits π
