Aeroplane over Auckland towing an anti-trans banner. Sickening. Probably ZK-WKK based at Ardmore.

seems to be orbiting over Mount Eden, possibly targeting Eden Park where a FIFA WWC soccer match is scheduled today. He's also, according to my reading of the rules, and the height reported by FlightRadar24, lower than is permitted for VFR flight.

@meejah @ajroach42 @angiebaby "what do they expect "Mastodon" to do here?"1. turn off link previews, if not completely then at least by default, or2. have one instance generate the preview then share it with the others instead of each instance generating its own preview, or3. randomly delay link preview generation up to an hour or two so that the load isn't all at once, or4. restrict link previews to known huge sites which can shrug off the load.

@clive Calm down. This is a 737-300 manufactured 30 years ago. This accident is almost certainly not on Boeing. The left wing caught fire "briefly" after aborting a takeoff at high speed went wrong and they departed the runway (for unknown reasons) where the gear collapsed and the left engine ingested bits of cowling by the look of it. The injuries were all minor according to AvHerald. The headline and picture are sensationalised.

comrades, your dedication to doing the opposite of what Elon Musk tells you to do is commendable and reasonable, but Wikipedia has quite a lot of money already. You know who does need more money for holding the powerful to account and ensuring important history is not memory-holed though? The Internet Archive.

RIP Kahurangi (Dame) Tariana Turia. After last year, with the hikoi and some spririted resistance by Te Pāti Māori in parliament, hopefully she felt she had successfully passed on the baton.

As expected, transferring to a new phone was a hassle. In particular MFA/2FA apps and Signal. I used Smart Switch (i think a Samsung app) to transfer most things by wifi.Microsoft Authenticator: on the old phone, backup to the cloud* (settings, backup). On the new phone do NOT click sign in, in the MS authenticator app. On the first screen, below the sign in button is a "restore from backup" button, click that then follow the prompts. Google Authenticator: somehow decided to back itself up to the cloud* on my old phone. At some point in the transfer process i think i was asked whether to transfer accounts, to which i answered yes. Shortly after i opened Google Authenticator my MFA thingies appeared automatically. Signal: there is a "transfer to another device" process which i did not see. I imagine that would work more neatly. Instead i backed up conversations to a local file on my old phone, noting the 6 x5 digit numbers encryption code. I moved the file to a usb drive, transfered the drive to my new phone, then on the first screen of a fresh installation of signal, clicked restore from backup.*i had avoided backing up top sekrit MFA to the cloud for obvious reasons. But it's the easiest or only way to transfer the credentials for those two apps. The only alternative is to sign in to every site one by one with the old phone or email authentication then generate a new authenticator QR code and load it in the new phone. Other auth apps might have a better system.

@zeborah i have the same question about a messages app. There used to be a Samsung Messages app, i think that's gone. There are innumerable messages apps in the play store, but who knows what lurks in their code. Might be a worthwhile exercise to write your own. I just don't have the brain energy to fight the dark patterns at the moment, so Google it is.
