Hey folks, just wanted to hear any opinions you may have if I was to add user accounts to BeaconDB.When starting this project I was against the idea of storing information that would make it easy to identify individual contributors, but I've since changed my mind on that. By keeping track of who contributed what data, it makes it significantly easier to anonymize any data I publish, and would also allow users to delete any data they've submitted.Ultimately this is your data - any thoughts?

I've made an issue to track key points: https://codeberg.org/beacondb/beacondb/issues/26Please let me know if I have missed anything.

@MrClon Accounts will be optional and you can still contribute anonymously - is that alright with you?

It's been a while, there's a fair bit to fill Mastodon in on!- we hit 3.25M networks just now! (definitely did not forget to post when we hit 3M)- I'm working on moving BeaconDB to a VPS hosted in the EU. This is closer to most users and should be capable of handling many more queries ;)- I've been reaching out to some non-profit attorneys to get some advice with US patents, but I haven't had much luck. If you happen to know a lawyer who may be interested in assisting please get in touch!

A few people have been reaching out asking if I was accepting donations, I've setup a Liberapay profile here: https://liberapay.com/joelkoen/I'm already receiving enough donations to cover the new VPS (thank you!), but if you'd like to support future infrastructure any help is appreciated :)

BeaconDB now has over 7M WiFi networks and 300k cell towers, spanning 85 countries!! An incredible effort from the community. 😄

BeaconDB just hit 10 *million* WiFi networks!!! 🎉 I honestly can't believe the amount of data that has been submitted (thank you!), and I'm really excited to see what the future holds for this project <3Now that there are more contributors, I've increased the detail shown on the map by another level: https://beacondb.net/map/

@craxiom's open source Network Survey app has added built-in support for uploading to both #OpenCellID and BeaconDB!If you're looking to do some comprehensive local data collection, give it a try: https://www.networksurvey.app/

Hey folks, there has been a fair bit of discussion this week regarding what the community expects from data dumps, and I've realised that obfuscating WiFi AP identifiers may actually be interfering with what the community wants: portable, open data - not some restrictive binary blob. How would people feel if AP MAC+SSIDs were plaintext in the dumps, instead of obfuscated like originally planned? If an AP moved, it would still be blocked from the database for at least a year to prevent tracking.

netcup has made it incredibly clear they do not care about people abusing their abuse system to permanently take down any server they host with just an email.Unfortunately, BeaconDB will remain offline for the next 16 hours. I'll continue to download the server's disk overnight, and plan to setup a new server with a different provider tomorrow.Any suggestions for a reliable European cloud provider would be much appreciated.

Scratch that- they've brought the server back online. No idea what's happening at this point, they haven't contacted me with an explanation.I'm glad the server is back online, I just hope it stays up long enough for me to have a new server ready to move to.> if further reports are received, your server will be blocked again immediately.

Hi all, it's been a while 😅 Just posting here to let you know that BeaconDB has been down for nearly 20 hours due to what appears to be a fraudulent abuse claim.Someone has contacted netcup with a few MB of logs that show the IP of BeaconDB's server being used to scan ports. netcup has decided to shutdown the server without seeking any clarification from me, which has also then prevented me from accessing any server logs to try and make sense of this situation. (1/n)

netcup will be giving me rescue access to the server shortly, as for some frustrating reason, if a server has received an abuse claim it can only be started in working hours of their timezone.I'll then be taking a disk image to ensure all data is safe and working with netcup to try and prove this claim as fraudulent.Hopefully won't be down for too much longer. I've been posting info as soon as I'm aware of it in the Matrix room, but I'll make sure to post updates here too. :)

Massive shoutout to AVee for making some huge optimisations in BeaconDB's map generation code, not only fixing map updates (it was crashing on the new server) but cutting down processing time from ~1 hour to **a few minutes**!> https://beacondb.net/mapYou should now see much more detail when zoomed out, and I've added some filters to help cleanup some submissions from planes and GPS spoofing. Also, map tiles no longer use Cloudflare's CDN.(attached images are animated before/after)
