@atoponce I recently came across a sports site that takes the presentation of data back to the basics - but in a way that includes colour, charts, team logos (amazing, endearing ASCII art). It loads fast and doesn't let browser choice impede access. But the guy behind it doesn't serve ads or offer subscriptions or forums or solicit social comment threads or…It's https://plaintextsports.com - and show what *could* be done given the will.

@atoponce Cheers! I'm a tinkerer. Condensed version:25 years ago I self-hosted static html, but started to use MS FrontPage to 'speed things up'. Once I looked at the code though, ugh!Next, Wordpress_com. I'd nothing to say in a blog but needed change. ;)GitHub Pages had me for 4 years: prebuilt customised theme built on a customised set of Jekyll templates - all of which I *further* customised...2019: moved to current self-hosted Wordpress_org site.I've still nothing to say though. :)

@mdhughes Every working day I have to deal with all of them - the very worst of the bunch is the side-to-side Knight Rider Kitt car type.Worse even than that is SolidWorks' one-of-many processes left-to-right type. Though it has a numeric indication of how many items remain it's worse because the load times can vary wildly, and at the very end there's a dialogue with a countdown timer asking if I want to rebuild a model. I might, I might not, but if I'm getting a tea or coffee I'll miss it. 🥺

@mdhughes Do you have any influence and an idea for a perfect indicator - with a realistic estimate* of time and progress?*computers are no longer the fast rule-following idiots I remember described in a late-seventies/early eighties book, so a good estimate will be fine for me

@mdhughes Sure. My ideas include popups such as 'Time increased because you checked email', 'Don't you DARE hide me again or I'll stop at 99%', and an excuse generator such as:https://bofh.d00t.org

@atoponce Is that a typical street on your route? I'm guessing so, I saw your gradients graph!Hoping you could enjoy the run and passed the fundraising total.

@sotolf I was about to say this (I'm way behind in my timeline).@atoponce Hang on a minute, twice as much vertical? Twice as much as that thing I saw the gradient profile of? Jeez. Is it a regular thing with time to relax or stupidly insistent? :)

@atoponce @sotolf No. Hate it. :) Would it be easier backwards? I mean the route not the style of ambulation!

@atoponce I recently reacquired a 1980 computing book*, probably the first I bought. It defines a computer as "a fast, rule-following, idiot machine."For longer than I can remember computer OSs and relatively complex software simply haven't followed this basic tenet, at least as far as the average user is concerned. As complexity has increased, the lack of a *predictable* UX has inevitably followed.(Yes I know it's a different age, in most ways it's 'better').* https://archive.org/details/goodcomputingboo0000jarr

@craigmaloney I recently re-acquired the first computing book I bought, or at least the one that first made sense to me. Published in 1980 it defines a computer as "A fast, rule-following idiot machine", implying that computers do just what they're told. Yeah.

@atoponce Despite the fact it'll be morally wrong to do so I need to print the images and hang them at my desk. It might help my focus, which is non-existent in this heat.

@entreprecariat Has anyone explained that, if you need separate systems, you can have multiple #Obsidian vaults?(I prefer to have one vault for everything, I use folders within it and tags throughout, but the software is flexible enough it doesn't really matter how one organises notes provided it works for you).

@bigzaphod When we started the process of moving into this house the 5 year old water & radiator heating failed immediately. November, 6 month old baby. We'd transferred an annual service contract from the previous home, pretty straightforward to call out the engineer, who replaced a couple of parts. The next year it died again, and repeatedly over the next 10 years; they replaced *literally* everything but the sheet steel case.We jumped at the big discount on a new system.
