The famous Orca Carbon Capture Plant in Island is currently in the news quite a lot. Various VIPs fly there and take selfies in front of it. It is the largest carbon capture plant on this planet and captures 4000 tonnes of CO2 per year. Sounds impressive! How much is that? The annual footprint of roughly 330 Germans 🙈

Good news for the German energy transition! In the first 9 months of 2023, more new on-shore wind turbines have been approved than ever before in the same period (5.200Â MW capacity) https://www.energie-und-management.de/nachrichten/detail/neuer-rekord-bei-windrad-genehmigungen-197558

I love to convert those numbers into nuclear plants for reference. This would be comparable to the capacity of roughly 3.8 plants of the size of Isar 2 in Bavaria. The capacity isn't comparable to the actual amount of energy those plants produce. A nuclear plant will always produce more in total because wind turbines suffer from intermittence – just like PV. But it takes roughly 10-15 years to build a single nuclear plant. This is the added capacity of 9 months.

We need better ways to think of the dimensions though. That's why those comparisons are helpful, even if not 100% correct. What is 5.2 TW of capacity? How much storage do we need now to compensate the intermittence gaps? How much can we already solve by a mixture of PV and wind? (They often go hand in hand) It needs to be more intuitive to think of all of this.

This stuff also makes me truly hopeful. The solutions are there and they are working and are already cheaper than fossil fuels and nuclear power. Storage solutions are also being ramped up. Yes, we need more added power lines and smarter grids and bi-directional charging to use our cars as storage and all of that. But the puzzle is coming along.

Reading the latest thread by Mastodon‘s CTO @renchap made me realize once more how small the team behind all this is and how they really try to listen to feedback and get it right. It’s incredible what they‘ve achieved. It’s literally David vs Goliath compared to other social media platforms. We should always keep that in mind when some things are not 100% smooth. We get an ad-free, algo-free, tracker-free, lunatic-billionaire-free space in return 💛

From my own experience, there's no good way to talk about when your ideas/design/code gets stolen. The risk is too high that you are seen as a whiny complainer and your motives are questioned. The folks at @ia wrote a fantastic article about it. This is IMHO very helpful for all indie makers. It's also good to get some solace from knowing that we all deal with this. https://ia.net/topics/copycats-and-other-monsters

I'm now officially "I've used and tried dozens of bookkeeping apps & services in the last years and finally ended up with a simple spreadsheet and I couldn't be happier" years old.

I'm going through various AI coding helpers for a few months now. I want to keep an open mind and understand if there's something really mind-blowingly helpful. But so far, I haven't found anything that is more than "nice to have". I think it's also a lot about the tasks that we need to solve at @getkirby Coding speed is never really an issue. That's why I don't massively profit from autocompletion help. The obstacles are always conceptual questions. Did you find anything indispensable for you?

@getkirby I also always judge the outcome by the amounts of energy that are put into LLMs and I can't stop that. If the result is "nice" I'm just not ok with that. It has to be way, way more than just nice.

Sometimes marketing is all about waiting long enough for your audience to forget about the 80s and 90s.I love how ALDI celebrates this brilliant new design that saves 40% of plastic by removing the plastic lid.

But that design is also a great example how we just started adding plastic to pretty much everything for 1.2% more comfort. That old design was always ok, it never really needed the plastic lid in the first place.

I grew up a few km away from the border to France. My classroom was 100 meters away from the Rhine. I was in 9th grade when they opened the borders. I was in 12th grade when they introduced the Euro. Visiting other countries in the EU suddenly felt truly magical. "Fuck you" to all politicians in this country who are currently destroying this magical idea for pure populism, to appease some fascists. It's all about staying in power - as if that helped - and I couldn't despise them more for it.

German politician Nico Semsrott has suggested that we give billionaires one year to solve the climate crisis. If they fail to do so, we should dispossess them. I think that’s a wonderful idea! It's never going to happen, but it's nice to dream.

Reading the shocked reactions that Apple and Google removed ICE warning apps from their stores, I think that more should probably read about the role of IBM during the holocaust. Can we please finally get rid of the fairytale of social corporate responsibility in big tech?

We've reached the first tipping point (99% probability even if we'd manage to keep the 1.5 degree target) This means coral reefs on any meaningful scale will be lost. Nearly a billion people and a quarter of all marine life depend on them. https://www.leeds.ac.uk/news/article/5861/new-reality-as-world-reaches-first-climate-tipping-point & https://global-tipping-points.orgTo roughly quote Maja Göpel: People don't seem to grasp the irreversibility of such changes in ecological systems.
