@AlSweigart I think it's interesting that so many folks in tech seem to think unions are only for physical labor. Your employer can take advantage of you in any field if you aren't organized. +++

@stux I showed this to my partner who immediately said, "Is that paw-kour?"

@detachedspork Yep. Same for any kind of citizen lobbying or protesting. I've seen "journalists" bypass the 2 or 3 people who are from the organization that organized a citizen's lobbying event (slightly dressed up, wearing a button from the org, holding a notebook, etc) and make a beeline for a stoned person who is just as likely to have wandered over for the free food so they could print stuff like, "Activists attending the protest weren't very clear on what their goals were."

I appreciate living in a place where a ten year old comes to your door for Halloween dressed as Google AI and if you consent, recites the recipe for gasoline spaghetti.

@cwebber I'm so glad that you continue to enjoy that mug. And I'm also grateful that you do serve on open source program committees.

Usually, when I tell people, "don't be afraid to ask for help" I am talking to everyone except myself. This week, I have let a few people know that I could use some specific help and have been met with incredible generosity. Like truly incredible. This is my PSA to tell YOURSELF "don't be afraid to ask for help" and mean it.

I don't know who needs to hear this but you are still allowed to have fun and see friends and eat a slow dinner and celebrate things, even while "all this" is going on. Make your five calls, be part of a protest, pick your piece of "the work" each week but also make sure to nourish yourself and your networks because we are going to continue needing each other.

This morning I woke up mad at software that doesn't exist. In my dream, I was trying to write a note using some kind of notecard template and it kept auto-completing all my words, eg but -> buttermilk, later -> lavender. Eventually my whole (very important in the dream) note was just a biscuit recipe with like 7 greetings at the top and my name signed at the bottom. I woke up angrily trying to just do a handwritten note with the world's dullest pencil on a piece of scrap paper. #softwaredreams

@futurebird @uguisubari One of my exes avoided a lot of popular culture because she didn't like the way the music was emotionally manipulating the audience. Now I always pay attention to it, but it still often works! It also occasionally makes me mad when they try to get you to sympathize with an unsympathetic character.

Why are only clam and corn soups called "chowder?" Maybe there are other chowders that I don't know about...

@futurebird If we're not going to stop police and civilian gun violence, build housing or do basic income? Maybe we could normalize more napping by building and maintaining public hammock parks and sleeping pods.

@glyph I like to think about it as an alternate future that we veered off the path of. Like we had this idea that computing was going to empower the masses, democratize access to information and power over the discourse. We didn't quite get it, but we tried a lot of times. I still have hope for our timeline.

@glyph A thing that I take lot of encouragement from is knowing that for every famous moment of change and famous change maker (eg Rosa Parks) there were dozens, if not hundreds of earlier attempts that paved the way for the one time it was successful. I don't need people to visit the house I was born in in 50 years or ask me for advice on unrelated stuff. I am completely happy to be part of one of the hundred earlier attempts that paves the way.

@futurebird @aadeacon I'd say for many jobs, at the highest level they would rather have an interchangeable set of machines that do all the exact same work and are equally disposable. Everyone tidily fits in the same spreadsheet column and when they need anything extra they can immediately be replaced with a less needy person who has identical skills. This world is unattainable and would be boring even if it were possible.

Is there a long fancy word for the experience of holding a 10+ item to-do list perfectly in your mind when you are outside on a walk and then having it all disappear somewhere between taking off your shoes and sitting down to your computer? Etherlistia, maybe?
