@john I love this! You have to really enlarge it to appreciate the sense of detail and the very unique style. Great, and thought provoking. People, rooted like trees; branches, mimicking insect wings; everything is connected…

@brook I’ve hearted your announcement already but let me say this personally again, too: Thank you for the upgrade, I am in awe how seamlessly and without any noteable disruption that went. Very, very grateful, all the more so after reading the article about the HTML exploit. Thanks Brook, you’re a champ!

@leo Boosting this although I do not listen to podcasts myself, at least not any that are hosted with the commercial apps. But this toot has a lot of interesting and helpful replies, so, it’s a recommendation for everyone listening now at Sptf, 4ppl, 4mzn, etc.Re: YT, there are great proxies out there, like e. g. https://vid.puffyan.us, that also work for videos.

Dear @Mastodon dev(s), I would like to suggest a tweak: A thread that is made of replies to a CW’d original toot, when the original is unlocked, the replies should be, too. It can be quite straining to click on CW again and again with each and every reply — and not necessary, because everyone interacting with the original will have unlocked it already.

Humans have become perfect little capitalist soldiers. They even declare everything a “challenge” — the 52 books a year challenge, the one film per night challenge, discovering new music challenges, map challenges, writing challenges, walking/hiking challenges — you know what I mean, right? Why don’t people just simply *do* things without giving them deadlines, goals, and trying to “validate” them by making them look like work?

Cory Doctorow re: surveillance on social media and the proposal for a TikTok ban (the so-called RESTRICT Act):https://mamot.fr/@pluralistic/110112578982634633It’s a long thread in 24 parts, here’s one excerpt as a tl;dr: “(…) Every American tech giant is at *least* as bad for privacy as Tiktok is — yes, even Apple. Sure, Apple lets its users block Facebook spying with a single tap. But even if you opt out of ‘tracking,’ Apple still secretly gathers *exactly* the same kinds of data as Facebook, and uses it to power its own ad product (…)”#Surveillance #TikTok #Facebook #Instagram #Twitter #YouTube #SocialMedia #Apple #Microsoft @pluralistic Also boosted by @tometaxu (thanks for the nudge!)

@doctroid Let’s go and actually like everything we like! (I’ve found it inscreasingly strange how many Mastodonians only boost, but not like (or favourite) — whenever I boost, I always like, too, and I even like a lot without boosting. It’s a sign of appreciation, whereas boosts are an attempt to make something more visible.)

A few hours ago, Eric Feigl-Ding tweeted this:Let this sink in—N95/FFP2-wearing cyclist @rogla just won elite @giroditalia 🚴♂️ race! This man even won a strenuous mountain ⛰️ time trial while wearing a mask. Several top contenders got knocked out with #COVID. No more “can’t breathe in a mask” excuses. 🚵♀️The original, twitter dot com/DrEricDing/status/1664034919360745472, includes a video.#COVID19 #SARSCoV2 #COVIDIsNotOver #LongCOVID #WearAMask #BringBackMasks #NormaliseMasks #Sports #Cycling

I seem to have fallen for false information; several people who have watched the race say that he DID NOT wear a mask while actually racing, only before and after. I will not delete the post because I still think that wearing a mask while in crowds, before and after the race, is the right thing to do and sets an example, but please know that the original claim seems to be exaggerated.

COVID-19 damages the brain. Students have trouble learning. Connect the dots.“They’re actually starting to see students backslide, losing the knowledge and skills they had. Across all age groups, students are falling behind.”“Study after study has shown that Covid causes severe brain damage and disruption.”“Covid brain fog remains a common and persistent problem for millions. Patients describe ‘the feeling that their brain is lost in a maze, and they can’t find their way back.’”“Some people get back to normal after a few months. Others might never recover.”Those are quotes from Jessica Wildfire’s latest “OK Doomer” substack piece, “It’s Not Learning Loss. It’s Brain Damage, and Schools Are Letting It Happen.” Read it, and get back to wearing a mask when among others.https://jessicawildfire.substack.com/p/its-not-learning-loss-its-brain-damage#COVID #COVID19 #SARSCoV2 #COVIDIsNotOver #COVIDIsAirborne #WearAMask #BringBackMasks #LongCOVID #BrainFog #BrainDamage

General question re: Mastodon update → 4.2.0When I click on the text of a reply to a comment I made, I am no longer forwarded to this particular bit of the communication, but the whole thread from the top. Only when I copy the link from the publish time indicator (top right) and enter it into a new tab, I am forwarded to the actual comment/reply.Does anyone else experience this?

As far as I can tell, most world religions (except for Buddhism, which I wouldn’t consider a religion, anyways) work with the threat of punishment and the promise of reward, the carrot-and-stick tactics. Are humans really donkeys who need this kind of incentive?#Religion #Atheism #Punishment #Reward #Psychology #Judaism #Islam #Christianity #Daoism #Hinduism

“Covid deaths are on the rise again, so what happens? Mask-wearing in hospitals is scrapped”George Monbiot in The Guardian, https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/oct/16/covid-deaths-rise-scrap-mask-wearing-hospitals“Despite a collapse in testing, which means the figures will be grossly understated, the number of death certificates giving Covid-19 as a cause has been climbing steadily as autumn approaches, rising from 80 per week in early August to 306 in late September. Who knows what the real number may be?”#COVID #COVID #COVID19 #SARSCoV2 #COVIDIsNotOver #COVIDIsAirborne #LongCOVID #Sequelae #WearAMask #CleanAir
