I'd like a firefox add-on that removes articles on the front page of news sites that use the words 'lambasts', 'blasts', 'berates', 'lashes out at',or even just 'tweets'. It's not news. Any suggestions? I'm willing to do some minor script editing or regex writing if need be.

OK, I did it. This is a greasemonkey script to un-display blocks that use words like 'tweets', 'slams', &c., on Washington Post & NYT.Pull requests to add sites or otherwise move past this basic draft are very welcome.https://github.com/b-k/tweets-are-not-news/blob/master/notweets.user.js

After you finish with calling customer service, there's that survey where they ask how your experience was with the customer service rep. I'm consistently disappointed that there's never an option for 'the rep was cool, but the managers who implemented the policies the rep has to work with should be reprimanded or fired.'

I tried to find photos of the 1969 burning of the Cuyahoga River (Ohio), but it was a pre-Internet event so photos are not prevalent. This is the best I could find: https://img.huffingtonpost.com/asset/5cd58fb51f00002f009d4e4c.jpegIn my mind it's always been vivid. If you're OK with Southern Rock, here's a good song from 1986 about the incident: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=deTl5FGnL7Y

Just had a serendipitous discovery that seems undocumented: that pause/break key on your keyboard that you thought was totally useless will indeed pause a process in bash or zsh. You're returned to the command prompt while the process is paused. Ctrl-Z also pauses processes but isn't as enjoyable. After doing your shell things, you can put the paused job in background via the "bg" command or foreground via "fg" as usual. The print screen key is still useless, though.

The attack ad against plant-based burgers aired during yesterday's superbowl (which, again, is proof that the meat packers are losing ground) was put together by a shell nonprofit named the Center for Consumer Freedom. Almost all their $$ goes to a lobbying group named Berman & Co. https://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Rick_BermanBy going through the shell nonprofit, firms can retain anonymity and bypass any lobbying issues. No point or action item here, it's just fun to see how corps launder their influence money.

Every time I hear somebody talk about the water needed to make almond milk (which, in the carton, is 97% water), but not mention any of the enviornmental costs of dairy, I think 'one more win for the dairy lobbyists'.The bar charts on Wikipedia nicely put it all in context: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Almond_milk#Sustainability

I'll be giving a 15 minute talk explaining why patents don't work for complex inventions like software or whatever you're reading this on. There will be bonus slides about how Amazon et al use patents to avoid taxes.7/28 @11pm UTC (so 7PM EDT, 4PM PDT).It's part of the incredible #SummerSchool program put together by the scholar.social Masto instance. I'm trying to come up with a list of intellectual property issues that we, The Internet, care about. What have I missed?* copyright and orphaned works* software patents* exportation of US policy via the US Trade Representative* open access to research* [your issue here]* [and here]

Hey, Mastodon, when is the last time you discovered new music, and how did it happen? To clarify: Pandora, Spotify, et al are very good at "We know you like pop starlets from 1984-1987, but have you tried this pop starlet from 1989?'. But how did you find things really out of your normal range?

Ways Mastodon can be more cyberpunk:* Everybody refers to their local currency as "credits".* We change our avatars to look like the 80s. More day-glo hair and multicolor eye shadow, everybody.* We meet people we follow now and then to hand off data on physical media.

I've updated the U.S. tax explorer for the `22 tax year. The Python version uses the same data, so that's ready for you too. May it ease your calculations.https://b-k.github.io/1040.js/https://github.com/b-k/py1040

@interfluidity Biden supported a limited military response to Oct 7, but pushed for greater restraint and more humanitarian conduits at every step. All sides of U.S. politics have benefited from black-and-white-ing that nuance to saying that Joe Biden is actively genocidal. So you've got two objects here, and it's unclear which any respondent will be thinking of: the effect of Biden's policy, and the effect of what has been portrayed as Biden's policy.

@interfluidity To Q1, sure. To Q2, I'm not sure if there's a state of the world where the USA can just tell Netanyahu to do things and he'll shut up and obey. Remember, as soon as the war is over, the corruption trials (and who knows what other trials) will resume. Just as the USA was during minority-elected Trump's regime, it's still an independent democracy.

@interfluidity But if your point from the poll is that supporting an unpopular country is unpopular, yeah, pursuing objectives has a cost.Every country has objectives; they're not easy and obvious. Remember earlier this month when Jordan downed Iranian missiles aimed at Israel? Why did the Jordanian military support Israel? Why did they choose to support this terrible status quo? It's not pandering to The Jewish Conspiracy---Jordan, like many Muslim countries, has zero (0) Jewish citizens.
