@starfrost For me it's a design decision to make use of biased data and unsupervised training in your manufacturing process. Of course these companies are aware that vast amounts of their data is prejudiced. The Google photos incident where a black person was tagged as a gorilla happened in 2015 and 8 years later they haven't fixed this, just blocked the ability to search for gorilla. These companies have had time to become aware of the bias problem. There are definitely many useful applications for AI and it's possible to work around these issues and mitigate impact to some extent before harm happens. Many companies however choose not to. To work around these moral dilemmas I believe you need to be open and honest about their presence and how you are addressing them.If you aren't actively looking for them as a user, prejudices will also make their way into everyday use of generative models.

I understand that people think their microphone is off when they have muted the microphone in the online meeting. Now, consider that the meeting software reminds you that your sound is muted when you speak.[”Your microphone is muted.”]It does this because your sound isn’t really muted… the software ”heard” you. The sound is just not transferred to other participants. But there is of course nothing stopping the software from capturing your sound anyway. This is one of the reasons I like to have a hardware mute button on the microphone I’m using.

As an aside, I spent an embarrassingly long time on getting the icons in the taskbar of that meme just right. The pictograms spell my name, if you look hard enough, and accept that a duck can be an "R". 😅

If you're reading about Iceland's biometric abuse, it's not the country - it's the British supermarket chain.https://newsletters.feedbinusercontent.com/740/740abc92ab921e904479a782cadab7cebae78277.html

Most "AI" consultants are in fact autocomplete consultants. It's like when a window washer's business card says "Transparency Enhancement Facilitator".

Going from: "I wanted the computer to do this well-defined task, and it did it, and saved me some time because I can verify that what it did is aligned with my intent, and correct."Going to: "I asked the computer random stuff and I'm 'obeying' without knowing why or how the output came about. I don't care much about understanding my own will anymore as long as the software says 'AI' on the label."

Happy Petrov Day to those who celebrate. On September 26, 1983, Stanislav Petrov made the correct decision to not trust a computer. The early warning system at command center Serpukhov-15, loudly alerting of a nuclear attack from the United States, was of course modern and up-to-date. Stanislav Petrov was in charge, working his second shift in place of a colleague who was ill. Many officers facing the same situation would have called their superiors to alert them of the need for a counter-attack. Especially as fellow officers were shouting at him to retaliate quickly before it was too late. Petrov did not succumb.I've attached a short clip from a reenactment of the situation in the documentary The Man Who Saved the World. The computer was indeed wrong about the imminent attack and Petrov likely saved the world from nuclear disaster in those impossibly stressful minutes, by daring to wait for ground confirmation. For context one must also be aware that this was at a time when US-Soviet relations were extremely tense.I've previously written about three lessons to take away from Petrov's actions:1. Embrace multiple perspectivesThe fact that it was not Stanislov Petrov's own choice to pursue an army career speaks to me of how important it is to welcome a broad range of experiences and perspectives. Petrov received an education as an engineer rather than a military man. He knew the unpredictability of machine behavior.2. Look for multiple confirmation pointsStanislav Petrov understood what he was looking for. While he has admitted he could not be 100% sure the attack wasn't real, there were several factors he has mentioned that played into his decision:- He had been told a US attack would be all-out. An attack with only 5 missiles did not make sense to him.- Ground radar failed to pick up supporting evidence of an attack, even after minutes of waiting.- The message passed too quickly through the 30 layers of verification he himself had devised. On top of this: The launch detection system was new (and hence he did not fully trust it).3. Reward exposure of faulty systemsIf we keep praising our tools for their excellence and efficiency it's hard to later accept their defects. When shortcomings are found, this needs to be communicated just as clearly and widely as successes. Maintaining an illusion of perfect, neutral and flawless systems will keep people from questioning the systems when the systems need to be questioned. We need to stop punishing when failure helps us understand something that can be improved.

I hate taking phone calls. And especially if they are unscheduled. I screen calls, and when I'm stressed and working hard taking even taking calls from acquaintances and friends just doesn't work. If you're anything like me, here's your reminder that you're not alone and that telephonophobia is more common than you may think.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone_phobia

The reason Grok so easily can generate nudes of children is because it is trained on that type of content. It is not using "imagination".Too few are saying this part aloud. Any face generated using image-gens can be from a situation of abuse.

Techbro stance: "Regulating AI is hindering innovation."The purpose of regulation is to protect humans from harm, support wellbeing and promote societal sustainability. So the techbro stance is "I can't invent new stuff if I can't fuck with people's lives and health."Except that's not innovation, that's abuse.Politicians and media really need to start understanding the difference.
