I just want to get paid to do exactly what I am interested in at any given moment, with no deadlines, and can freely drop any project without notice. is that too much to ask

@kev one could say the same thing about physical typefaces, which are not copyrightable in the US. neither is a bitmap of the characters in a font, which does not meet the threshold of originality in the united states (imagine trying to copyright the Helvetica "O". Only because of this bizarre legal interpretation that font files are "computer programs" and even though the output of the program (the viewable font) is not copyrightable, the font file itself is: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Systems,_Inc._v._Southern_Software,_Inc.

@kev I can, for example, create a bitmap logo using any paid typeface, then make that the logo for my open source project. But I can't make the body of the text on my website that font, and in fact, most fonts license their fonts _per pageview_. This is insane to me.

@piggo SWIM could do this on a personal site or something but not on an open source project

@kev Here's an example: https://displaay.net/typeface/roobert/Regardless, not all creative works are considered copyrightable (for good reason). In the US, typescript and calligraphy are creative works that are not copyrightable. So is some art which is simple enough to be easily reproduced (e.g. John Cage's 4'33"). But because of this bizarre legal interpretation, a digital typeface is a "computer program", not a typeface. I find this to be absurd.
