I found this backup tape while sorting through boxes — the final resting place of Sound Bytes BBS.Turns out I can still fire it up in DOSBox and browse through everything as a time capsule.Though the farewell message suggests the BBS would return in summer of 1996, the world moved on quickly, and the BBS scene — as it was — disappeared just like *that*.By the time 1996 did roll around, we were busy building our area's first dial-up ISP, and there was no turning back.#bbs #retrocomputing

Welcome to the world, little one.Meet the very first Sprout24 CPU, fully assembled tonight for the first time.25 circuit boards, 2600+ components, 730 LEDs, 1000+ integrated circuits, 9700+ logic gates, and over 29,000 transistors. She's going to be a thing of poetry when she starts executing code.I've tested each board individually, but have yet to apply power to the entire thing. I'm not sure I'm ready yet to dare try.#cpudesign #retrocomputing #sprout24

I just realized that my set of Linux CDs from 1995 is the one that is infamously responsible for there being no official Debian 1.0 release. #debian

@kkarhan @stman Yes, it's a new ISA from scratch. It's a lightly-pipelined RISC-style 24-bit architecture designed with an eye toward teaching about computer science. This is just an introduction... I'll be sharing more technical details here and on the website after I get through this round of testing.

YES! The CPU passes the smoke test. And just executed its first code!First few manual clock cycles were NOPs, then I fed it a steady stream of additions to a register (add r2 r1 r2) to make the lights on the top register start counting. So it's actually computing! Then I started on interfacing it to the emulator so I can feed it actual programs. Not completely finished with that yet, but it's close enough that I can see it starting to work. All signs are looking good!

As an expression of gratitude, each PCB for this project features a quote from an influential woman in computer science. So far that includes Lynn Conway, Edith Windsor, Margaret Hamilton, Sophie Wilson, Katherine Johnson, Ada Lovelace, Anita Borg, Grace Hopper, Susan Kare, Linda Ott, and Mary Allen Wilkes.

I've ironed out a couple more bugs, and it's executing code nicely now. :heart_pride:This program doesn't do anything too complicated, so there's still more to test. Unconditional branches are working here, so the next step is probably to test out all the different types of conditional branching.#sprout24

@bridget I couldn't wait until today. I validated our software against Debian 12 a month ago and started upgrading a couple of our servers yesterday. Looks like a good clean upgrade this time around. Kudos to the #debian team as always.

From my archives... this is what the command center of a mid-1990s dialup ISP looked like.Later iterations would be more advanced, but this is how it started. A natural progression and leap of faith from the multi-line BBS it replaced.#retrocomputing
