Now I will detail what I meant by "malpractice." This morning, #MstdnCa sent out an #email using Mailjet, a third-party provider, asking for donations. Although the email has an one-click #unsubscribe header (by Mailjet), in the email body, the actual unsubscribe link (by Mailjet) is obscured using black text on black background; instead, the instance admin says to delete your account to unsubscribe. This is extremely deceptive and I consider this a severe breach of trust. #mastoadmin

I believe such practice likely contravenes anti-spam laws (https://fightspam.gc.ca) as this is clearly intentional. (It's also questionable whether deleting your account actually removes yourself from the mailing list.) Also, in their privacy policy, it's unclear whether "information" contains fundraising messages (including those for instance operation), but even if it is permitted, it raises doubts over the owner's ability to properly handle personal data for their purposes.

Recently got addicted to #Japanese #retail #store #songs. (Those been to Japan know they play shorter ones on loop especially in appliance stores, but here I mean full size.) Gotta say, they make capitalism sound good, literally. By the way, my personal favourite for now is Hello Sofmap World (both original Japanese and English "soul" versions). #music最近迷上了日本连锁店品牌曲(对在日本去过家电卖场的人不陌生吧,有些短的可以做到分分钟洗脑,不过这里指的是full size),不愧是把歌颂资本主义做到了极致……顺提,个人推荐是Hello Sofmap World(日语原版及英语抒情版)。https://redirect.invidious.io/watch?v=lFBs8lIPIyc

@mothcompute @chfour Don't use matrix.org, the performance issue is ridiculous (not to mention moderation and whatnot - even though they're finally catching up on that now).

Here's my WIP #Matrix-#Revolt bridge that I've been working on for the past month:https://codeberg.org/austinhuang/matrix-appservice-revoltStill needs some polishing (permission checks and error handling, plus documentation). After that I'll set it up in prod create a room for public general testing.#TypeScript

@strypey I disagree that Discord is more tolerable for privacy, but they do have a point in the targeted userbase.

@pixel See https://joinmatrix.org/guide/popular-rooms/ for more rooms, notably the off-topic space. You can also consider adding bridges (I think most managed instances offer that).

@mastodonmigration As evident from their discussion in https://github.com/snarfed/bridgy-fed/issues/1305 certainly there is a use case for small organizations or instances mostly serving bots (based on feeds). Also, instance admins has always been able to force all users follow a specific account (I know mstdn.ca does it often for announcements), so there is no change other than allowing admins to decide the format of the Bluesky handle. The bot follows them back so users are notified and can unfollow the bot as well.

@meatlotion Short answer: not really. Long answer: of course in theory you can add custom fields to a user's global (see MSC4175) or room/space (through some state event) profile, but you still need your (and other users') clients to display whatever you want to display according to the values. @cinnyapp proposed and implements MSC3949 which provides power level name colours or icons next to their name (this covers the room/space part), but it is not accepted into spec yet.

@futurebird I would genuinely love to work for the MTA in IT (it is an interesting system after all!) but unfortunately I'm disadvantaged by my work authorization situation (OPT) and also I don't have prior experience beyond degrees...
