Matt Mullenweg said Automattic wants to 1. Open source Tumblr2. Integrate Tumblr (and maybe WordPress) into bluesky, matrix, and mastodon I think my mind is blown. Not at what he wants to do per se but what this means for social networks going forward. The implications of these platforms eventually being interoperable or interconnected is something that so much ink had been spilled over in the last decade or more from being a said as a joke to something that may end up actually happening.Like mattdpearce said on Twitter, Tumblr might just outlive Twitter and that is just so ironic and funny đ¤Łđ¤Ł

What if we reintroduce the old social network model? People used to have to post their content on their own websites or blogs and often they include a blog roll or links to other blogs or sites they like to help with discovery. Social media made all that so much easier but it also enables malicious individuals and content to roam much more freely. Reintroducing that control over what people are willing to see and deal with in a much more deliberate and comprehensive way may be the necessary element to reduce the amount of toxicity thatâs being spread around.https://t.me/auliasays/34

Despite the apparent mass migration of Twitter users to Mastodon in the past several weeks, I donât feel that this network has experienced the 2009 Hudson River moment when a plane landed in the water and its pilot, Captain Sulley, became sort of a household name after Twitter users began sharing photos of the plane and the rescue/evacuation attempt that followed. In Indonesia that moment was the JW Marriott bombing which thrusted the site to national prominence when terrorists bombed the Marriott and Ritz Carlton hotels and a survivor live tweeted the entire moment from the explosion near the cafe at the Marriott.Iâve read people describe the vibe of this place being like Twitter circa 2010 but to me it still feels a little earlier than that. On the other hand maybe it doesnât need a moment like that because people already understood how it works in general. Mastodon is a network that, while technically different, serves similar functions, which means unless there are more migration level events or perceived existential threats to Twitter, the general public wonât fly the coop. The appeal of this elephant site right now is the ability to fully isolate undesirables and to be where people like Elon Musk have no control but if you and your community arenât affected by their shenanigans (not necessarily due to political leanings or social views but because for you itâs like looking at foreign news on TV), thereâs no reason to move because everything still works just fine. Moving here means doing the same thing at a different place which has slightly different features but with more technical barriers.Yes, the technical barriers exist and not just from picking servers but things like finding out who to follow (because peopleâs followings are limited), posts not being carried over when moving servers, inconsistent display of metrics, having to follow accounts before you can add them to lists, etc. It certainly doesnât work as a 1:1 replacement and people looking for that wonât see the appeal. The pull factor has to be something else and the reasons will be different from one person or community to the next. #Twitter #Migration #Mastodon

Some #Twitter things that the company didnât build or invent itself⢠Twitterrific was the first mobile Twitter app⢠The word tweet made its first official appearance on Twitterrific⢠The hashtag was from Chris Messina⢠Advanced Twitter Search was originally Summize⢠Twitter bought TweetDeck⢠Live stream was from Periscope acquisition⢠The official Twitter app was originally Tweetie which they purchased from Loren Brichter⢠Mentioning people with an @ was user driven and wasnât linked to accounts because they didnât consider conversations to take place on Twitter initially⢠Quote tweet was adopted from people copy+pasting tweets and adding RT in front of the copied tweet⢠Threads were built to accomodate existing user behaviorDid I miss anything major?

These motherfuckers, right, they imagine and advocate for some misguided utopia where society functions with limited or minimal government involvement until they fuck it up themselves and then they demand involvement and a fuck ton of assistance from the government insisting that itâs what the government is there for, as their safety net when they fuck things up after telling everyone to trust them because they can do it themselves until they canât.#SiliconValleyBank #SVB https://techhub.social/@Techmeme/110008372645617420

@lauren on one hand you got people being high and mighty against those still posting on Twitter, at the same time lauding the lack of features that prevent those people from making the switch or leaving Twitter entirely. Canât have both đđ

Convention organizers who hold events far outside of a major city should be compelled to offer shuttle buses from and to major pick up points in the city to reduce the need for people to drive long distances.Exhausted from having to make two return trips, driving a total of four hours and having to repeat tomorrow.

I wish there was a way to tell the map apps to never present routing options through certain roads under any circumstances unless explicitly authorized. When you're driving you don't have much of an opportunity to evaluate your routing options beyond what's offered by the map. When you're in no position to pull over, this becomes a nightmare. If I can tell my Ecovacs/Roomba to not enter the bathroom or go over a specific spot in the house, I should be able to tell Maps to never enter or offer routing through certain roads or even road types. Also, these companies map cities using LIDAR, the tech should be able to tell the width of roads they go through. That info should be fed into the system so we can tell the apps the width of our vehicle and to avoid roads of certain widths or tell us if a road has varying widths.#Maps #GoogleMaps #AppleMaps #Waze

@seth no, the shuttle can be offered as extra cost for those wishing to take them especially if the venue has no mass transit access (I know, but these places exist). Having to drive costs fuel and often toll fares. A shuttle service can mitigate that.

@grammargirl maybe Iâve forgotten what it was like being a college student but itâs insane that they donât even bother fact checking the responses. Then again fact checking requires them to do the work theyâre trying to avoid by using ChatGPT, so ⌠đ¤ˇđťââď¸

@grammargirl that is so weird. Never heard of it outside of the US and definitely will give anyone who says that a funny look.
