The Beatles - Revolver (1966)Genre: RockRating: ★★★★★This album might be the best that the Beatles ever made, and this CD release is an incredible edition of the album. The AAD is incredibly faithful to the original tapes. I can hear all the details vividly, the dynamic range is exemplary. The standout is Ringo's drumming—he really is the king of feel. Individually, each track is a classic but it's especially nice when you hear the complete album. If you haven't heard this, go hear it now.

Casey T. Schmidt - The Dawning of the New Age (2013)Genre: Easy ListeningRating: ★★☆☆☆Casey T. Schmidt is the Thomas Kinkade of music. Perhaps Schmidt would think this is a compliment, but it's not. While Kinkade and Schmidt are adequate at what they do, both their works descend into kitsch. This isn't music for people that like music so much as it's for people who can't stand silence. There's no joy in those melodies. It is functional -- that's it.

Alex Roque ft. Sebastian Loque - You Could Be Mine (2010)Genre: ElectronicRating: ★★★★☆If this single came out 10 or 15 years earlier, it could have been a dance classic -- at a warehouse show, everyone would have cheered. But in 2010, people weren't looking for this sound. By this point, dubstep went mainstream. Though this has a dub remix, this is the chill side of dub -- nothing like dubstep. Hearing this in 2022, I prefer this kind of vibe over something from Skrillex.

Inaya Day vs. Diego Ray & Nick Corline - Til the Morning Comes (2010)Genre: HouseRating: ★★★☆☆This was 1 hour 12 minutes of remixes: 12 variants of the same song. I didn't mind it. It was listenable. In the house community, Inaya Day is a legend. This is a perfectly fine single, it just didn't catch fire. To me, nothing stands out. However, my daughter loved this so much, she came out of her room to and danced her heart away. If you like house, this might be your kind of song.

The Cranberries - No Need to Argue (1994)Genre: 1994Rating: ★★★★★One of my favorite bands. They could do everything: beautiful ballads, ferocious rock, sparkling Irish folk ditties. And Dolores O'Riordan had one of the most distinctive voices in popular music, something so crisp and honest that once you hear her, you'll never forget her. If this doesn't convince you to give this a listen, go listen to "Zombie"—probably one of the most memorable songs of the 90s. A true classic album!

Various Artists - Trainspotting (Music from the Motion Picture) (1996)Genre: RockRating: ★★★★★One of my favorite soundtracks, since it introduces me to so many great artists. For example, prior to hearing this, I had no idea who Underworld was, and now I'm a fan. To my 15-year-old ears, this sounded amazing. It still holds up. Go check out the dynamic range—it's impressive! I challenge you all to pick up the CD at your local thrift shop and compare it with the Spotify version. Big difference!

Gaynell Erikson - Don't Run from Your Past (1991)Genre: CountryRating: ★☆☆☆☆Anyone who says country is "easy" hasn't heard all the terrible country that I've heard this year. This is one of them -- not even the worst, but still awful. Thank God this is just a single! On this recording, the voice is thing, reedy and fails to actually reach notes consistently. The instrumentation is paint-by-number. Curious, I just heard Gaynell Erikson's recent stuff. It's much better. This song? Bad!

Franz Ferdinand - You Could Have It So Much Better (2005)Genre: Post-PunkRating: ★★★☆☆I like the songs. In terms of songwriting, it's almost equal to Franz Ferdinand's debut. However, the production is horrible. Everything is too compressed. Yeah, I get this was the aesthetic. But if you can't even manage to be quiet during the quiet parts, this is a failure of the mastering. Why did bands from the 2000s piss on their legacy so much? Inexcusable.

This is happening! Until today, my kid has never seen Jurassic Park. Now she's going to see it the exact same way her old man first experienced it: on a VHS tape. Yeah, it would look better on our 4K TV but it's not the same.

Vica - Beatet I Mit Hjerte (2011)Genre: DanceRating: ★★★☆☆I wish I could find out more about Vica, but it she has very little footprint on the Internet. She was some kind of Scandinavian pop singer -- which particular flavour of Scandinavian, I don't know. And this was more than listenable. It wasn't game-changing stuff, nor is it something I might remember tomorrow, but it largely achieves its purpose and for that, I'm grateful.

This came in the mail today: Blumway Bluetooth Cassette Player. I’m sending this back because it lacks the core feature I’m looking for: the ability to record tape to SD. I I t an okay Bluetooth cassette player? Meh. I’d rather use a headphone jack. But what about the cassette mechanism? Bad, not unplayable. But still. It has a decent radio and loudspeaker. For $23, bargain. However, it doesn’t have the function that I want—nor what was on the product page specs—so I’m returning it.

Bjork - Post (1996)Genre: Art PopRating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★I feel incredibly privileged to own this album because it really is quite a feat of art! Bjork doesn’t just demonstrate vocal mastery, she conclusively proves that she’s a force of nature. This albums is deep, full of emotion and flourishes. It is both raw and refined. Words fail to describe the many great things about this work. So I’ll just say this: you might think I’m overhyping Post, but I assure you that I’m not.

Chero Michel - Learned From The Best (2008)Genre: R&BRating: ★☆☆☆☆This is one of the most infuriating albums I've ever heard. Chero Michel is actually a good singer. She has all the tools to succeed. Nevertheless, for the entirety of the album, she's flat. Not in a tone deaf sense. Rather in the sense of she's in the neighbourhood of the notes, she knows where they are -- but she just can't hit them precisely. I've never heard someone who's so simultaneously good and bad at singing.

Paul Simon - “The Rhythm of the Saints” (1990)Genre: FolkRating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆After Graceland, Paul Simon explores indigenous African music again. This time, he goes further into the rhythms. I confess that he executes this well, and this is an excellent album. However, I can’t help but feel that, while Paul Simon helped expose us to many excellent musicians from Africa, there’s still quite a bit of fetishizing going on. He’s another white guy benefiting from innovations made elsewhere.

Denny Lee - Kindly Keep It Country (2007)Genre; CountryRating: ★☆☆☆☆What is it about country music that attracts so many atrociously untalented people? Denny Lee can't sing. His claim that "Deer Hunting Season Again" is a hit is an outright lie. This was 1 hour I'll never get back, an hour that made me question why anyone invested music. But you know who I feel terrible for? The poor session musicians who played on this album! I hope they got paid well!
