#introduction time now that I'm ready to start trying mastodon out! I currently work as a data scientist in the population health realm. Our team supports public health decisions. Previously, I was a research astronomer; my PhD work was on #exoplanets. I'm a dad to 3 kids, 5 and under, and we live on unceded Snuneymuxw territories. On Mastodon, I hope to stay in touch with astronomers and meet other cool folks! I'll probably toot about parenting and science.#astrodon #astronomy

Some facts I want people to know about the #LunarNewYear !1. I'm really glad to see more people/corporations using #LunarNewYear instead of just #ChineseNewYear. CNY should of course be used when referring to that particular event, but not every culture celebrating Lunar New Year this weekend are celebrating Chinese New Year.2. In particular, we #Vietnamese people celebrate a holiday we call Tết, which is what we call our Lunar New Year.[cont'd] #tet

       3. Like many Vietnamese words, a generic form of a word usually has an implied meaning. "Tết" means "festival" but it usually means the Lunar New Year celebrations, unless context or additional adjectives are added. (Side note: similar for the word for "meat"---it normally means pork unless an adjective is added).4. This is the one zodiac animal year that differs from our LNY cultures. In Vietnam, it's #YearOfTheCat not the rabbit!! [cont'd] #caturday #tet

       5. There are other cultures that also use the Lunar calendar and might celebrate their Lunar New Year in a different cycle/part of the year. So Lunar New Year doesn't always mean this weekend's celebrations either!6. I really appreciate it when people take time and energy to distinguish between cultures, especially since I feel that many Asian cultures are amalgamated in Western media.7. Finally, I have yet to see a flyer/ad that mentions Year of the Cat! Maybe in 12 years? :)

@stux I thought about that before but now I think a common language would be a bad thing, outside of specialized use cases (eg international law, programming languages). I now think of language as a form of identity and self-expression. To consider that all humans should mostly use the same language is akin to requiring all humans to eat the same food, wear the same clothes, make art the same way, show emotions the same way. So much human beauty would be lost.
