Having an "ñ" in my surname means constantly being gaslit by online forms that tell me my name can't contain special characters only to then tell me that my password must contain special characters, three emojis and a valid chess move.

@futurebird We just put everything inside a logarithm and call it a day! :D But yes, it's really, really hard to internalize those scales. We just get used to it I guess.It does however complicate science communication. The scales –and the jumps of scale– are so large that when saying things like "This is X times more massive/larger than/further than Y" usually involves stupidly large X and/or a Y that is already well beyond our daily experience.

Spotted at The Munich Readery, my favourite bookstore here in Munich. I couldn't agree more with Umberto Eco!With rare exceptions —like when one of my favourite authors publishes a new book —whatever books I happen to be reading at any given time were bought months if not years before. After 15 months of hard work, my dad has finished this impressive model of Minas Tirith! It is 1.4 m high and entirely hand-made out of wood. One of the most time-consuming parts was manually engraving the bricks on all walls and buildings, but this was key to properly convey the huge size of the city. Everything was painted by hand, adding some wear and tear.
