@mmasnick @jeffbyrnes I really like this with one minor point: the idea that we’ve been running a content moderation experiment that has failed due to its merits and instead due to frankly awful adherence and enforcement of said moderation. Minority communities have been complaining for ages about the sparse, inconsistent nature of transphobic, sexist and racist content on numerous platforms and how despite numerous reports, blatantly bigoted content stays up (while said minorities are typically hit hard by the same policy). I think it’s letting them off the hook to blatantly claim “we tried ‘an experiment’ and it failed” when no control, no review, or protocol were deployed. They paid lip service, then called it a failure. That’s a joke, not an experiment.

@jeffbyrnes @mmasnick what we HAVE done is pretend that we won’t allow this type of speech while simultaneously rewarding it and banking on “cancel culture” to draw more impressions/readers/reviewers in. That’s a whole conversation unto itself; my point is only that his starting premise is flawed and should not have been yielded so easily, regardless of the fact that it’s pretty unimportant whether or not he’s right as to whether he’s the Nazi bartender. It’s just another attempt to deflect responsibility while profiting off said irresponsible enabling.

@purple @misc I agree! I also think search engines should be owned by libraries as public utilities.

@purple @misc I low key started thinking it about how we could write a scalable system that could be public owned / federated; I did get some feedback about problems with my ideas and a book recommendation.I’m rather focused on my job hunt but I dislike the corporate ownership and “SQUIRREL!!!!111” type hype chasing investor pressure that comes with it. I think we’re already seeing how it’s a problem and will continue to be so.We do know that at some level, it’s possible scale out search; Google already does it. I’m not an expert in information retrieval so all my initial ideas are pretty basic and probably not workable. But I really think people need to own it.

@timnitGebru So a bunch of Nazis are attempting to gain power by convincing us they're the only ones capable of defending humanity against a nebulous, ill defined threat (AGI)? Where have I oooooooh right it's literally the Nazi playbook. It certainly is a strange coincidence that their solution towards this threat just also so happens to reinforce white supremacist patriarchal structures by enabling propaganda at scale through a biased automated lie generator during a time of political and social upheaval and uptick in violence against sexual and ethnic minorities! Wow, so weird. This should be damning by association alone ("What do you call a guy in a room with a bunch of Nazis? A Nazi"), so the fact that companies like my former employer are doubling down on their investment with OpenAI despite stuff like this constantly coming to light is... depressing. I can't believe how gross and blatant this all is except yes, I can.

I just don't think I've seen a billionaire ever do a single goddamn thing that humanity couldn't have achieved in a safer, more equitable, more humane, and more beneficial manner without them.

Watching how delicate our internet stack is, in terms of implicit agreements about how websites interoperate and what happens when someone breaks one, is fascinating. That is, OpenAI and Google start massive text scraping and want to charge for their services; Reddit, in anger and mismanagement, respond to breaking this "gentlemen's agreement" by announcing highly restrictive and expensive API to make sure their website isn't used as a content farm for other companies to profit from. This breaks the "gentlemen's agreement" that Reddit has with its users, which is that they'll plant your walled garden if you're not such a huge dick about it, and go dark in protest. This then breaks Google's search. One (or two) bad actors, ignoring the actually-in-play rules and instead taking advantage for personal gain, has managed to deal a serious blow to the house of cards.
