i wonder how much revolution depends on an atmosphere of love or affection. every individual person doesn't have to "like" every other person, but i would guess communal action works best when there's the widespread warmth and respect of wanting the best for each other

A lot of papers could be improved if the authors just acknowledged that their work has no clear applications and that they only did the experiments out of pure curiosity.

I started reading a Nature paper and was getting irritated that it was written so haphazardly.Kept reading and turns out it's a scoop of the recent work of someone in my lab. It's written badly because they hacked it together in a hurry to beat my labmate to press. Damn.

We already knew he was super racist. He had already said and done an entire litany of things that were obviously anti-black/brown.The media's "sudden realization" that he's a white supremacist is an attempt to move the bar for correctly identifying someone as racist into cartoon villain territory. His systemic attacks on PoC weren't enough for media outlets to peg him as racist, his bigoted speech wasn't enough either. Only his laughably extreme monologuing was enough.

Thinking about how during the US Civil War, Black troops passing through parts of the south would ask folks in the local enslaved population which slave owners and overseers were the most violent. They would ransack the plantations of the most brutal slave owners, execute the overseer, and distribute the plantation's resources to the slaves who had produced them. Because of this, there were a lot of autonomous Black farming collectives in the south right before Reconstruction.

Last night, I told a friend I was thinking of cutting ties with that I was reading "An Indigenous People's History of the United States" and she laughed out loud. So that's the end of that. Time to fade...away...

Yeah. This doesn't mean much from me, but autistic people have every reason to be angry at neurotypical society all the time.

I was talking to a friend about his experiences growing up in school. As adults and even as children, autistic folks are explicitly and implicitly punished for being enthusiastic and transparent, and they're punished by NT folks for overlooking conformity to arbitrary social rules.

NT teachers interpreted my friend's good qualities (focus, lack of respect of arbitrary authority, lack of participation in useless busy work) as intentional rudeness. In communication, he has to meet NT people far more than halfway. He has to interpret intentionally opaque and deceptive social cues, and he has to hide his depth of knowledge so that people don't feel "overwhelmed" (insecure).

One of the most disturbing things about America is the way racist adults will intentionally attack the self-esteem and self-belief of little children they insist on racializing. We remember. And they spread their hatefulness to white kids when they're still too little to consent. They intentionally make it harder for white children to have an intact capacity for empathy and compassion. In both cases, people have to spend years to undo the damage and reclaim their humanity.

Most racialized children distinctly remember the first time they realized "race" was a thing, and that they were being treated as less than an entire complex human being because of it.So it saddens me when white folks, even anti-racist ones, say they think racism is a 'natural' human impulse, albeit one that should be resisted.

Vote for Sanders for me, since I'm not sure my right to vote is intact. Voter roll purges, reporting 'difficulties', and understaffing of polling places in black neighborhoods have been rampant so my vote may be suppressed. Thx.

There's a new podcast by two queer black journalists called Fanti (Fan + Anti) and it's almost entirely about introducing nuance to pop culture discussions.Enjoying it so far, the hosts tend a little bit toward the moderate side but they have good instincts and many good takes.https://maximumfun.org/podcasts/fanti

The state of Alabama conducted a ceremonial lynching of an innocent black dude today. May Nate Woods rest easy. White supremacist america is disgusting.

Today I found a great example of common pitfalls that happen with US progressives around racist incidents. The pitfalls are (unintentionally) on display in this therapy podcast.https://feelinggood.com/2020/03/09/183-tough-conversations-about-racial-bias-yikes-do-we-have-to-talk-about-this/It's a good example of how even folks who are less bigoted than average perpetuate harm, so it's very instructive. There's a long way to go.

whenever some organization starts talking about "increasing inclusivity," I'm always like - did you mean "ending the violently enforced hoarding of resources and opportunities?"
