My third Peter Cronin watercolour demo.I called this ‘Catalogue of Errors’ because there were so many things that weren’t as intended, although I think I’ve successfully hidden many! The result is pleasant, I think, but I may well have another go in a few weeks to see if I can improve it and avoid the errors.I’d love to get your thoughts and comments.#Watercolour #Watercolor #Aquarelle #Landscape #Painting #Art

St Illtuds, Llanwit Major - first full Plein air painting using all my kit, starting from a sketch for composition / value check then fully painted on site. The special sky effect is known locally as ‘rain’ - after two days of intense heat I decided to risk it on day three and it started raining just after I’d put the sky in. Stepped back to get a bit of shelter from some bushes and carried on. Then the intense heat returned. It was so hard putting in the roofs and trees the paint was drying almost immediately, so I didn’t put in the bushes and trees in front. I could have added later inside, but then it wouldn’t have been totally Plein air, so I decided to leave it 🤷♂️, I think it still looks ok. So pleased to have done this.Decided against putting the archaeological dog tents in too.#Watercolour #Watercolor #Aquarelle #Landscape #Painting #Art

Looking Out To Sea, Watch House Bay, Barry Harbour.360x175mm Saunders Waterford rough. Fresh of the easel, based on a photo from my travels last week. Trying to do a sketch and notes before each painting now - though the notes don’t necessarily influence the painting!#Watercolour #Watercolor #Aquarelle #Landscape #Painting #Art

Sleepy Hollow Farm, Pomfret VTA very quick sketch to see if my sketchbook will take watercolour - it looks like it does. I wasn’t set up to paint, but found I couldn’t stop once I’d put a little colour on. It turned in to quite a nice colour study. It’s a Seawhite cloth hardback 140gsm 195x195mm.It takes colour well and stays bright, unlike my previous Moleskin. It takes quite a while to dry, but stains almost instantly (from ‘non-staining’ colours). This means it won’t be great for normal washes and won’t lift, but knowing those limitations, it can be a very handy and cheap sketchbook - it’s a fraction of the cost per page of a watercolour sketchbook.#watercolour #watercolor #aquarelle #acuarela #aquarell #acquerello #aquarela#sketch #sketchbook #landscape

Gower. My first painting in over three weeks (excluding the little sketch I did) and I felt very out of practice. Based very loosely on a Peter Cronin demo, changing a few bits. The scene itself is very simple, with little to draw, so it offers simple ways to adjust the composition or experiment with the brush. 1/8 sheet Saunders Waterford rough.I did two of these, the second version even quicker, which I’ll share tomorrow.#Watercolour #Watercolor #Landscape #Painting

Gower v2Having not painted for over three weeks, I found time to do two quick studies based very loosely on a Peter Cronin demo. This is the second, quicker and looser than the first, with a huge amount done in the first wash wet in wet.I’d be very interested to hear your thoughts on the pair. Is one ‘better’ than the other?1/8 sheet Saunders Waterford rough.#Watercolour #Watercolor #Landscape #Paintinghttps://ian.jago.uk/@art/111200919845233903

Farmhouse in the HillsAnother from a Peter Cronin demo. 1/4 sheet Saunders Waterford rough. These start out how Peter does them, but how the first wash settles determines what I actually do next, which is usually quite different! The wall had much more variety of colour when painted, but as it dried it’s gone flatter, which is a shame.#Watercolour #Watercolor #Landscape #Painting #Art

Autumnal WindrushI tried a quick autumnal version, because I've never done those colours before. The sketch I did at the same time as the last one, and the first wash, so both stages only took minutes. The main wash I did a day after. It was too wet and I was starting to fiddle, so just called it a day and it is what it is - an experiment and learning exercise.#Watercolour #Watercolor #Landscape #Painting #Art

San Sebastian Chruch, Mijas1/4 sheet SW rough. Not happy with some of this one, especially the sky. If I did it again, I’d leave the sky to last and turn it upside down. I would normally wet the sky first, but knew I didn’t want much water on the paper.Great fun trying to have warms and cools especially in the white of the church.Edit: I think the photo is slightly too bright, certainly the main shadow appears darker IRL, I must learn how to edit photos properly!#Watercolour #Watercolor
