@sotolf This is so common... People sometimes act as if you could read their minds to get what they want, when the truth is that not even them really know what they want. But it is you, who is trying to help, the one to blame of the results. It happened to me, in different contexts, too. ;)@paul

If you are a software developer who uses Linux, I would like to know your choice. Feel free to coment why, and boost for reach. Your feedback is much appreciated. :)

@quietlife It's a very interesting choice for sure. :) I had a source distro for a while (Kiss Linux), and I really enjoyed it as a learning experience, but the overhead of building everything from source was too much for my rather weak hardware. Plus, there's the *cognitive* overhead, and I already have too much of that now. ;) Thanks for sharing! :D

@dushman Yeah, I know Artix. I have an Arch install myself, and Void, which is an independent distro, but RR as Arch, and non-systemd, as Artix. But I use neither as dev machines, I'm aware of a version bump causing breakage in any of my software projects, that's why I'm avoiding rolling release. ;) Does it works well for you?

@quietlife I know a guy who uses Gentoo as well, he does sysadmin work tough... And yet it's really amazing the fine-grained package control that Gentoo enables, with all those flags and stuff. And yet as I said, at this point I need my environment as "plug and play" as it can get, because I'm totally invested in learning parts of the programming, not tooling, stuff. But having good tools in working order is paramount! :)

@quietlife Sure it is. ;) I'm a fresh graduate from a Programming course, so that's what I want to focus my eventual career on, but if-and-when I've landed an actual job, we'll see. :)

@dushman Aha, sounds good. :) AFAIK Perl is quite... Conservative, meaning stable (as the existence of Raku would be a proof of, right?) So I guess there's less possibilities of breakage on version bump than in more moving targets, say PHP, which is one of the langs I use ATM. :)

@dushman Yup, "conservative" may be an understatement. XP TBH I've never used it, but from what I've heard it a) has awesome regex, b) is very appreciated by old UNIX graybeards, and c) it hogs the lower positions in every programming languages performance tests I've seen around. XD

@dushman Yeah, these things are usually trade offs. Python seems to be pretty slow too, at least if compared with, say, C or Rust, but that hasn't stopped it from going into first position in the TIOBE index, and being used almost everywhere, from web development to data science, IoT, AI... Sure Perl has its use cases and environments where it shines. :)

@dushman That sounds noice. I use Void myself (not for development though), and one of the things I really appreciate from it is runit. I love the simplicity (write a service, or Void just created one for you, do a symlink, bang, done!) and the very noticeable lower startup times, compared to any of the systemd distros I have. :)

@captainborracho That's a lot of years experience, for sure. :) Yeah, I've been using Ubuntu myself (for development) mostly for the same reasons to stick with... It's just that I'm feeling a bit uncomfortable lately, with the obsession in pushing snaps, and being enterprise-owned is a bit vague, but real reason to be a bit worried too about things that could happen (like that Amazon issue from years back...)

@captainborracho Yup, the real point for this poll and thread was to pick some alternatives if I'm eventually pressed to switch from Ubuntu in my dev machines. I'm already using rolling release distros in testing machines and for everything non-dev related (Arch, Void and Debian Sid) as a testing ground for that eventual switch, as I'm considering many other options. But yeah, nowadays any tried-and-tested distro is at the very minimum usable for dev work once you adjust I guess. :)

@teratology For development? I've got a Void install and actually I started my programming course with a Void machine, but there were some showstoppers which made me get Ubuntu instead for dev... How's it working for you?

@benjaminhollon It does matter, indeed, at least in my experience. You can write code with anything, starting from pen and paper... But when the dev stack(s) are going huge and complicated, some differences between distros, well, do make a difference. ;) NixOS is on my current watch list, BTW. :D

@paul @gregorni @theDoctor I'm making preparations for an eventual switch, if it ends up as an "immutable snap delivering system" or whatever. I have too much stuff up and running in my Ubuntu installation to consider migrating RN, but it's on the roadmap depending on what happens next. One thing I'm sure: if I switch, I'll go to a real community distro, say Debian, Void Linux or Arch Linux (which I'm using already, all three of them, just not on my dev machine). ;)

A lot has changed in the world of software, but the pleasures of modal text editing (hello #vim!) are as bright today as they were in 1991. :D[Image taken from Marvel Comics' "The Legion of Night", published in 1991].

Any advice regarding a job interview? I finally got one, I'm applying as a web dev, and I feel I won't even nail a FizzBuzz. If you haven't any advice, a prayer maybe? Thanks! :D

Status update: finally, after ~6 months since I finished my internship, I've landed a web developer job, starting next Monday. It's what I wanted, a local IT enterprise, and I'll be working at the office. They'll pay for some courses to invest in my training, and the initial terms are pretty good for an entry job.I want to publicly thank everybody who had shared advice and encouragement during these hard months. You know who you are. Love you. <3

@sotolf I wasn't so sure myself (in all honesty: I was getting ready to apply to "non-skilled jobs" instead), but constant support and encouragement has kept me in the way, and here I am now. :D
