@vik Interestingly, haven't seen any major news organisation active in Mastodon or even ActivityPub yet. There is a BBC World but it has not posted anything. Compared with birdsite, the gap is astonishing.

@atomicpoet @Gargron I am trying to get my head around this. If I mention ONE person, then it becomes equivalent of a direct message? Or is it still possible to write a generic message and @ mention that one person who might be interested in it but everyone else can also see it, say an article of interest? Can you clarify please?

@lightweight @bob I hope NZ government takes inspiration from the EU https://social.network.europa.eu/aboutThe mindset needs to change from using Zoom to bigbluebutton or jitsi meet. I meet this resistance everywhere in the academia here as well, very few people are ready to use R/Julia/Python for their data analysis or LibreOffice to write their papers, instead jump into MS products and other paid options and brag about it. People used to laugh at me when I proposed #rstats at UC in 2007 when I joined.

@DrCuriosity @lightweight @bob Yes, you are spot on!A few months ago I was discussing with a university academic in charge of digital learning about using virtual reality to classrooms and a project I proposed for consideration for courses I teach at the university. I was talking about using #mozilla #hubs when he told me how they were "influenced" by Microsoft to adopt the hololens for VR.

@dznz @davidgarywood It's not unusual for people to go back to the #birdsite now and then, but with the acceptance of #fediverse that we have seen in the past few days is encouraging. The level of engagement that already happens in #fediverse is _different_ from what goes on in twitterverse. Some people may still return for small talks and doom scrolling but if we hold on to our convos and invite people keeping options open, I am hopeful that we will see they will return. And stay.

@lightweight Appreciations for authoring a _very_ important thought piece. Perhaps a petition is in order. What you write about governments is applicable to universities as well. 'Hostage' is the appropriate word here. What needs to happen to shift this mindset?

This is the bit I cannot get my head around; Speaking of influential groups, if they are truly champions of openness and fairness and have public interests in mind, what makes them subjugate to a private enterprise that has a profit motive, in the face of wide and easy availability of free and open source alternatives that are as good and even better, product for product?

@strypey I have had the same issue being diabetic. We found a brand, possibly, kettle, that sells salt free chips in the local paknsave. If I come across it again, will share a shot. May try it if you haven't already.

@strypey An excellent proposal! I am trying to get my head around as to how that might look like. So a 'tab' titled, 'interest' will list all relevant posts? I was looking for #cricket this evening. It varies from instance to instance, e.g., if you search for #cricket here, you will get one set of results, but if you search in say mastodon.social, a different set of results.

They seem to have a consistent position and explanation on what they do and how do they deal with servers, AFAIR in their about page:https://qoto.org/about/moreIt’s a #STEM focused server. As qoto.org has a potential for encouraging serious science-based and academic discussions, so there can be unintended consequences of blocking qoto on the basis of their policy of defed.Just a thought I wanted to share with you.

@atomicpoet Chris, I have often been baffled by this: several good people I happen to know in the twitterverse, when they first experience something like #Mastodon, keep saying , 'it's too complicated'. I must be missing something that they have experienced, what it could be? If you want to post, follow, like, share, how much difference exists between twitter and this? Is it the tweetdeck like appearance of Mastodon client? Perhaps a phone client will make for easy onboarding (tusky/mtext)?

@rasmusdotse @strypey @atomicpoet Hi Rasmus, I am keen to see what UX/UI you come up with. Say someone is interested to join mastodon and not too savvy about it. I know an elderly literature prof active in bird site, but she got very confused when some of us invited her to join mastodon without actually inviting her to a server. Visiting joinmastodon, it was obvious why she found joining mastodon so complicated, 🙂 Need better onboarding
