@ceejbot And of course "we don't use it" means neither "we will never use it" nor "we haven't used it yet".

@ceejbot You should only worry when the lima beans are gone. White people will eat pork knuckles, pickled eggs or gas station hot dogs before they'll touch lima beans.

@xerz There were a lot of companies receiving Taligent development kits (in hopes they would make apps for it). I'd bet there are still copies cached away in basements or storage units belonging to people who worked for them back then.

So the other day we got the ingredients together to teach the kids about non-Newtonian fluids, which is always a lot of fun. But Amazon screwed up the order somehow and we ended up making a batch of non-Euclidian fluid instead and it was a huge mess. Once we realized the mistake we tried pouring it down the kitchen sink and it immediately started dripping from the ceiling in the master bedroom, and then got in the living room, flowing out of the car's dashboard air vents... good thing Amazon was prompt with a refund.

(🧵 1/2) Is there an archive interested in DVD-r disks of (USA) regional broadcast TV? About 20 years worth. My mother is in the process of clearing out her house. One current target for removal is a large collection of DVD-R disks containing local TV broadcasts from the small rustbelt city she lives in. There are thousands of disks. Please boost if you know anybody who can take these in. Contact me if you represent an org that might be interested.

(🧵 2/2) My father's main pastime from the early 80s through his death was recording local broadcasts. His VHS collection numbered over 5000 tapes. We couldn't find an archive that could take them -- and it turns out many of the tapes were unusable because of mold. In 2022 they were sent to landfill. Some time in the late 90s or early 00s Dad switched to DVD-R, eventually wiring up a bank of recorders to record broadcasts up until mid-to-late 2021. There are thousands of these disks, most of them have the time, date, channel and shows notated separately on paper. (I do not know how many thousand, only that it's more than 2.) We're hoping that since they're digital media and were stored better than the tapes were that they won't have to face the fate the tapes did.Again: boost if you know anybody who can take these DVD-Rs. Contact me if you represent an org that might be interested.

@mansr @craigmaloney DDG does use Bing, and I've been worrying whether Microsoft's pivot towards LLMs was going to affect DDG. I guess it doesn't matter since DDG has decided to be proactive about it. In the stupid direction, unfortch.
