@purism I would say it has been concern for several years, it's just has been ignored by entire industry and with SolarWind it has made it to a front page and companies started to pay attention to people who has previously raised those concerns.

@ozmik While all of that is true, Librem5 is more or less finalized product that is being sold, where PinePhone is still a prototype, as far as I recall in a beta right now without any clear plans to actually launch it as a product and it is also cost 4 times less than Librem5. I respect what both companies are doing let's cherish those efforts and investments rather than diminish other guy, otherwise we will be stuck to spying devices in our pockets.

@danslerush I would disagree about computers, you could build it using parts knowing each component and then install open source OS, that way you won't touch big tech. There is very limited path in doing something like that with phones.

@metalune as long as developers will do a good job, historically growth in hardware was driven by "laziness" of software development teams, or in reality by unwillingness of software companies to spend any time of development life cycle for performance optimization of their software.

@kev I would suggest it's all about those socioeconomic changes around the world, looks like fabric of our society changes and those changes aren't good ones, which brings all that stress. Stop the world I want to get off type of feeling.

@mike Here is a potential use case, let's say recipient of that information can't run PGP, so they involve their IT staff, but do not want them to see information, so 4096 bit key to cover transmission, and then simple zip pass to prevent IT from picking into it.

@mike yeah unfortunately that's where things are going, Tesla is also using a subscription model for self-driving features, but that one is a bit more justifiable since the AI model is a software and so on, but charge for a heated seat is a pure greed.

@mike so what you are saying that campaign posing as fake Coursera or Degreed would work better. You need to share those details with infosec folks :)

TIP: For better privacy use a search provider that doesn't personalize your internet searches, and potentially doesn't track search criteria. For example DuckDuckGo declares in their FAQ that they do not track user search criteria and thus can't filter out items based on previous searches and they don't have access to any other cloud data that can be used for the same purpose. #punkprivacy

@kyle I believe that's only happening on the phones that were purchased through the plan, typically the best thing to do is to buy an unlocked phone outright, that's not as free as buying Librem, but at least you would be able to factory reset it.
