I have to say, IRCv3 looks like a decent alternative to Slack.#IRC

I mean personally I still prefer #XMPP, but I still can't find a proper web client, if anyone has an idea, let me know. #IRC

There's a large number of #FreeBSD, #OpenBSD, and #illumos users out there. We don't talk much because it "Just Works™"I was not able to prove this for a very long time, so I used the most powerful weapon available out there: asking!https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/comments/1f1hr4m/unix_but_notlinux_club/

@neb @Toasterson @RL_Dane any operating system except Linux would fit this. Including macOS and Windows.

@RL_Dane @neb @Toasterson agreed, but they are documented to some degree. For example, couple of weeks ago I was doing macOS development on the road. then I realized that I've been coding for 3 hours without inet.Meanwhile most Linux distros don't come with `man(1)` anymore :/

@ricardo as much as I like the work that Cloudflare does, now that they are kind-of-a-single-point-of-a-failure and a very sucky registrar, makes me want to stay away from them as much as possible. But, alas, the world does not listen.

I've been following #FreeBSD-hackers for a while now, and everyone seems to be talking about #Rust. There are people who agree, there are people who don't and there are people like me, who wants to get answers to simpler questions, such as "Why Rust?".The Rust community seems to think that it's the revolution in Memory-Safe languages. Sorry, you are not. Far smarter people have been doing this for longer time. So, Rust? Ada? Oberon? Pascal?More about my rant here: https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-hackers/2024-September/003698.html

@gruber @wezm it might even end up been more useful. I mean both Android and iOS are toy operating systems. I would love to have Linux or NetBSD on my *looking around* 10+ outdated iOS devices in the house. We do that with MacBooks anyway.

@gruber @wezm unfortunately true. But if makers allow it, then amazing things happen. I’ve been daily driving my Nokia N900 for couple of weeks now. It’s a phone from 2009 and runs latest version of all modern software.

I’m trusting CVs and LinkedIn less and less.I work with someone, I see that they have a hard-time doing simple things such as configuring an IMAP client (client, not the server), have a hard time installing software and connecting to a VPN.Somehow their CV and LinkedIn says that they are an expert in system administration, Windows AD, Unix, Cloud, and much more.At this point the only thing I trust is written content, such as code, documentation and blog posts. How did we get here?

The more I help my friend with his Python project the more I learn everything is just a bad knock off of Erlang. No proper pattern matching, no processes, not even a proper key/value database in the system. This language is a toy. It's a good toy, but still a toy.

I'm gonna be honest with you: I hate that ZFS is available on Linux so easily these days. The folks at illumos, FreeBSD, etc, work for years and years to make cool technologies like ZFS and DTrace available everywhere, while Linux folks never make such an effort.Want to install a software? well you have to use this specific containerization technology which relies kernel internals.Want a graphical system? well it relies on an init system that's built specifically for this OS.WHY??????????

10 years ago when I told people that systemd will make Linux systems more crappy, people called me crazy. Now, everyone is wondering if this was a good idea. Here are more things to be careful about, in case you missed my prev messages:- PulseAudio / Pipewire- Gnome- GTK4- Wayland- dbus- NetworkManager- A messaging system that’s not federated- Linux-specific software (e.g. Docker)I know this not because I am smart, but because others don’t think critically.https://mstdn.social/@jschauma/114076781784299928

The fact that macOS is more Unix-like than mainstream Linux distros makes you wonder how shitty other mainstream Linux software is.Please, for the love of god, call your congressm… I mean, email your mailing lists, tell these devs that they are not as smart as they think they are. systemd was a mistake, and they should know. Ask any sysadmin who runs a HPC cluster.

@cwebber why just right wing? I was banned from Twitter when it was controlled by the extreme left because they were owned by the government. Many friends got blocked from Twitter because they were tweeting about a genocide (which no one spoke about, thanks to oil money).

Every time I go to a hacker’s forum (the orange site, Lobsters, etc) and read comments, I keep thinking to myself:You fucking pieces of shit. 99% of you has done only the top 1% of programming languages, you’ve never seen any crap other than Node/JS, Go, Python, and now Rust. And you want me to take your opinion seriously? You’ve never done functional programming, you still think Pascal is different because it uses BEGIN instead of {, and basically, you just copy other’s opinion.

you are basically if a standard liberal was watching CNN, or a standard conservative was watching Fox News. have no ideas of your own.My point is: go f*ck yourself, no one cares about what you say anymore. Everything you suggested in the last 20 years were all shit. they were so shit that you had to “jump ship” every time something else was hyping…

Moved a customer from AWS to a rented bare-metal server, from Elastic Beanstalk to FreeBSD+ZFS+Jails, from S3 to Minio.Somehow now they're paying 1/3 the price and got 4x better performance.Imagine if they were on-premis for the same yearly price.#Cloud #Unix #SysAdmin

Any Rust integration is a nightmare these days. The language is still unstable, the compiler is huge, and anyone who is on anything “niche” (by popularity standards, not actual usage btw) will get left behind. Also, for some reason Rust compiler assumes everyone has a super duper modern computer. It’s sad that Rust had all these awesome solutions just to be terrible with tooling. (I mean the syntax sucks too but that was kind of expected)https://infosec.exchange/@harrysintonen/115282560311330600
