@realcaseyrollins @posrev it is happening in the United States (has happened and continues down the path) with emergency services, medical care, _libraries_ , and yes the USPS. Republicans in this country have a wonderful strategy of hamstringing social services by passing legislature to remove funding, which in turn makes the service less efficient, then they get on their pulpits and criticize the slow government service. Ask anyone with a disability about privatization of services. They'll give you truth

@icedquinn @posrev @realcaseyrollins ok great. Is your disability such that government services could have ever improved your life, but due to GOP decimating those options are not available to you, or are you just chiming in in hopes that one counterexample negates my larger point about marginalized people understanding the necessity of equitable public services

@icedquinn @posrev @realcaseyrollins all right, so you would prefer a private corp provided that service, instead of say, the gov service wasn't prohibitively labyrinthian/expensive? My point is *still* that you should get those services without trouble, I'm sorry I assumed you were popping in to say "I have disabilities and I don't want help from government"

@realcaseyrollins this is interesting. Can I ask what events in your life have occurred to position those issues specifically at the top of your list of "things we should stand up for"? I believe that you are genuine in your desire to contribute to a "society that provides a maximal amount of freedom, ", however I have seen many people lured by the red herring that is "cancel culture", which bad actors use to distract from ongoing economic disparity

@realcaseyrollins and maybe I have misinterpreted your post about COVID, and I am decidedly not a Christian, but it does not seem very christ-like to choose your own personal freedom (the ability to go out to bars, not wear a mask, not socially distance, and generally ignore infectious disease science) over the health and safety (and literally the lives) of your neighbors.

@realcaseyrollins @posrev right, that is step 1 and 2 of the process. Step 3 is praise UPS or Amazon for being a better mail/package delivery system than the USPS. Those private services have *zero* incentive to do things like provide services to rural areas or provide services at fair cost, despite rhetoric about the free market being a benevolent and divine force for equity.

@realcaseyrollins @posrev how you could look at the recent ~50 yr history of American politics and think "hey, we need to further gut public good projects and hand them over to private corps" is absolutely beyond my understanding unless you a) don't have a solid understanding of that history or b) picked up views from your parents or edgelord web buddies without much lived experience in the system itself.

@realcaseyrollins @posrev should Nestle own the rights to distribute water across the nation? Should Comcast own the fiber lines and charge exorbitant prices for embarrassingly slower-than-most-1st-world-countries' internet speeds? Should PG&E accept billions of dollars in revenue for decades, choose NEVER to spend a dime on equipment maintenance, cause statewide biblical wildfires and get away scot-free? THIS is what privatization does.

@realcaseyrollins ok going to take a different approach here since I again disagree with all of these points. I was a software engineer for org supporting veterans' healthcare so I am aware of the problems with the system, and can tell you with certainty that the solution is NOT "let private companies handle healthcare". Can you tell me why you don't like PBS, and which news sources you prefer?

@realcaseyrollins do you think it is a sin to get COVID? How is spreading disease amongst your own community an act of love?

@realcaseyrollins @posrev wow I did not think you would agree with that. How about air...should a company own and distribute...air?Comcast & friends are doing EXACTLY that, crushing any opportunity for municipal networks by lobbying legislators: https://publicintegrity.org/inequality-poverty-opportunity/how-big-telecom-smothers-city-run-broadband/ they DID cause the massive fires in california last year and they DID get off with negligible fines... these are real things that are happening now

@realcaseyrollins @caseypicks uber is not a viable replacement for TRAINS, we already solved public transportation but refuse to build the infrastructure because of lobbyists (Kochs etc). Are you unaware of the vast tower of scandals and exploitation that is the gig economy? Uber just bought itself legislation in CA that exempts them from existing law that requires fair compensation and healthcare for their workers.

@realcaseyrollins who produces their content? Do you have any idea why channels like Fox and CNN might have captured a larger audience? *hint* the market prioritizes sensationalist clickbait over dull, accurate, necessary news

@realcaseyrollins ah I assumed you were talking about PBS News, which I view as a gem of publicly funded information distribution in a sea of predatory billionaires gaslighting the poor. Are you concerned that your tax dollars are going toward nature docs? Bc I assure you the majority of your taxes go to tanks and defense department consultants. Maybe you just want PBS to produce entertainment? I don't think this should be a function of a government - there are many things that should be. Do you disagree?

@realcaseyrollins I have seen a number of logical missteps in our discussion so far, there is a huge difference between publicly funded organizations and state-run media outlets. You seem to be conflating the two. Additionally, I don't see why PBS should become a private corporation if their reason for existing is to produce free, accessible, educational & informative material, a goal at which they succeed. Remove the obligation to justify their budget and add a profit motive, you've ruined PBS
