I never fully understood why cinema fans proclaim 24fps as untouchable. Sure, I totally get there's a look to it, however...We watch sports TV at 60fps.We play videogames often at 60fps.But somehow movies can only ever be in 24fps or else our brain gets dizzy and it looks bad? Hmm.It's a shame the Hobbit movies weren't very good. I wonder if it could have shifted perceptions a bit on higher framerates.

TIL Traveling Wave Tubes, a special kind of vacuum tube for microwave RF amplification invented around 1940, are still being used in spacecraft today. The JWST has multiple!I didn't know vacuum tube amplifiers were still in practical use anywhere (outside of niche audio), but it turns out TWTs are simply the most efficient microwave amplifiers out there, and they are also highly suitable to the environment of space. Cool.https://www.powerelectronicsnews.com/the-travelling-wave-tube-twt-a-vacuum-tube-still-key-to-microwave-amplification/

@aral I think we need Decentralized Identity to finally happen more than anything. There's no reason why, in this age, the Fediverse still works like E-mail. With all our data and identity stored on a single server identified with a traditional user@domain URL.Once you can use your private key to interact with your identity on any server at any time, that's when #decentralization can really kick off. Mastodon.social down? No problem! Just seamlessly continue from another server...

Finished writing an internal app in #Rust and now I'm slightly depressed because I won't have another excuse to write new Rust code for a while...

I've never mentioned here one major reason why I'm a fan of #RustOne of my interests, and part of my job, is looking at system-level performance of applications. And what I've noticed is while data-parallelism continues to scale well (we have no trouble building bigger GPUs, and the class of applications which use them), task-parallelism lags behind. It's not the hardware, there's plenty of CPUs now with many cores, but it's rare for software to use all of them./thread

It is just *really* hard to write task-parallel code. When any thread can access any piece of memory at any time, every memory access becomes a potential race condition. Programmers have an understandably hard time grappling with this boundless complexity.Rust doesn't completely solve this problem but it provides helpful constraints and tools to manage it. Letting programmers more easily write safe task-parallel code, which is also more easily verifiable as correct on inspection.

So I encourage people to try Rust (or programming languages like it, I suppose) as not only I've found it helps with writing safe and fast serial code, it additionally mitigates a lot of the hazards and complexity of writing task-parallel code, which has become necessary to fully utilize the hardware being built today.

I probably spend way too much time on writing E-mails because I can't edit them.I have a tendency to rewrite and restructure sentences, and I often end up leaving small errors behind. At least on Mastodon I can fix these after the fact. But an e-mail will be wrong, forever!

@stux Huh. A hacker who pulls off a prank instead of something super malicious or tries some kind of scam. Still annoying but also refreshingly old-fashioned.
