Is there a service that will host a single Mastodon account for me (not an entire instance) but let me alias it to my own domain? I don't want to run an instance, but I would like to control my address/handle.

Increasingly looking like the current state of affairs will require me to have my own fediverse server. (I'm not attached to it being Mastodon, necessarily.) It seems like masto.host is the most-recommended managed hosting provider, but I'm open to other suggestions. I am _not_ going to manage yet another server myself.

I am certainly very engaged and amused by the conversations I'm having over here on Mastodon, but the absence of Black twitter's critical mass, and the folks who riff on/think through the aspects of culture that I care about is a huge loss. I have some of the parts that were interesting about the other site, but few of the parts that were joyous.

I am trying to talk less about social media drama on here, but I will say it is sort of my personal hell to have spent roughly two decades thinking deeply about decentralized social media, content moderation policy, managing bad-faith actors, systematic online abuse, and the role of journalists in the architecture of generative online platforms, and see a broad public discussion going on where the loudest voices are all approaching this with “I don’t know much, but here’s my first thought!”

Like, I’m far from the only one, but credentials at a minimum? Has run a platform with millions of users that has no fascist presence, has been doxxed/stalked by the currently-active bad actors in the mainstream ecosystem, understands the role of policy (including global policy) in impacting network design, knows both non-profit and VC-backed economics, has been a working writer at a mainstream media outlet, has deep visibility into current coding practice & culture. And… didn’t go to Stanford?

Anyway, here’s a subset of my writing about Twitter in just the last 10 years; I’ll have another couple tens of thousands of words from the archives online shortly. https://anildash.com/tags/twitter

Hi! I'm looking for someone to admin an instance of @takahe that I'm considering as my canonical fediverse presence; I'm pretty convinced that the platform that will succeed for bringing more mainstream brands/institutions into the fediverse may look more like this than like current Mastodon. https://jointakahe.org (I'm also interested in exploring using Datasette alongside for analysis/stats.) Anyone interested in helping? DM me or email with rates.

This is good, but also highlights the need for a fediverse brand/icon that’s not Mastodon, as the platforms that succeed for big organizations may well not actually be Mastodon. https://mastodon.social/@drewharwell/109553083544613990 (Unless the ship has already sailed and it’s too late to rebrand the concept.)

@taylorlorenz the link previews thing is complicated because retrieving the data for them is decentralized, meaning each instance (and sometimes, each *app*!) is hitting the website for the preview info. It’s often been omitted because it can knock small websites offline just dealing with serving previews when a popular user shares a link.

@taylorlorenz As for QTs, let’s find you another fediverse tool that supports them; you can almost certainly import your followers there if it offers the features that mastodon won’t.

@jab01701mid @taylorlorenz the mastodon tools are definitely not well designed for the mainstream journalist use case. I think we can either find ones that are closer or (more likely) newer tools will arise soon that are a better fit.

@taylorlorenz @jab01701mid @LucyWildboots @KimCrayton1 just a matter of which ones and in which contexts.

I’m trying to figure out why almost no podcasts are interesting to me, but I can listen to the audio of a lot of YouTube and Nebula content and it’s engaging. There’s something about voice/tone that is significantly different.

@clive when we were in India the last few weeks, most public spaces had TV news on, and the format has metastasized even worse than in the U.S., so it was literally just BRIGHT RED screens with 3-8 people shouting at each other and actually false assertions being made in front of a background of CG flames, along with the requisite 3-4 scrolling lines of text. A grim vision of our future.
