@futurebird imho the most compelling reason 1 is not a prime is because it would be terribly inconvenient for many theorems that revolve around primes. The fundamental theorem of arithmetic is what I’m thinking of primarily, but I assume there are others. But that’s largely because I feel there is too much mystical platonism in the math education I received, eliding the fact that these are systems we humans created for both utilization and beauty.

@futurebird 538 is a shell of what it once was, which was hardly perfect (as you’re well aware)the polls did look pretty weird though; maybe it’s just cope, but I had a hard time believing Trump made significant gains amongst young and minority voters. all the same, glad Biden stepped aside for Harris

@futurebirdNo disagreement in the slightest. Unfort I find many of the people I know are on the other end of binary thinking, blaming everything on the system. Declaring that the ones currently running (& further shaping) it do not matter.Sure, they’ll begrudgingly admit that the Biden admin stopped drone strikes & withdrew from Afghanistan. But still, somehow, it was all the same whomever we elect. There is no disproving that, so they continue to await the glorious revolution 😑

@futurebird went to look up what the heck these things are, and the shop was specifically marketing it as a weapon that can pass through metal detectors undetected“Thank you for supporting my family and my small business.” 😑

@futurebird Speedrunning is where I encountered it the most. Probably because, unlike my experience in schooling, speedrunning means revisiting earlier work over and over. School was almost always on to the next thing.Being able to casually complete an extra difficulty challenge for fun, when beating it the first time at regular difficulty was a challenge. It’s closer to “being able to reproduce those motions” than “being able to intellectually understand”, but imho it’s a feeling akin.

@futurebird according to my Iranian-immigrant coworker he’d probably be additionally annoyed because he’s not Arab (not that the Trump cohort would know or make a distinction), and given his political allegiance there’s a decent chance he’s also bigoted against Arabs

@futurebird there are also brands/advertisers that market specifically to people who see themselves this way (e.g. CostCo), but my experience this always gets handwaved away as simply a rational choice
