Until now in #Canada, the general term of an author's #copyright persisted for 50 years after their death. As of Dec 30, that will be extended for another 20 years, even for authors whose works were about to enter the public domain. This change obvs does nothing to incentivize their art—they're already dead. It's protectionism of authors who produced their work with expectations of shorter copyright terms, and theft from the public who were entitled to free access.https://gazette.gc.ca/rp-pr/p2/2022/2022-12-07/html/si-tr58-eng.html

With exceptions for anonymous works etc, any artist who died in 1972 would have had their work under #copyright until the end of 1972 and then for 50 years, ending at the end of Dec 2022.For instance, look at the list of authors who died in 1972—all their works would have entered the public domain in January, if not for this extension. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1972_in_literature#DeathsSure, maybe this change incentivizes authors and artists working today. That's reasonably debateable. My concern is with the theft.

I should say, I do appreciate that the government probably had little room to move against this. It's at least as much a product of the US exerting its power to extend #copyright terms around the world (despite the international treaty standard of 50 years). In fact, Canada held out longer than I'd thought it would: The 50 year term survived despite a few rounds of copyright reviews where the industry called for extensions. But that doesn't make this extension right.

For those asking, my son printed it for me from this model that I’ve pined for on and off for years! No idea what printer he used — whatever his university’s library has: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1068443

The entire situation with renaming the birdsite seems too dumb to be true. If it were within a month of April 1, we'd assume it was a joke.

Amid some dangerous and extremely disappointing statements from student organizations about Israel and Gaza, I am impressed that University of Ottawa law students from Muslim and Jewish student associations came together to make this thoughtful and united statement. While their statement leaves much unsaid, it is commendable that they focus on common ground, in shared pain and mutual respect.#Ottawa

My 20-year-old has no idea who U2 is. Have I failed or succeeded as a parent?
