@kairyssdal maybe if they want that to be true I can start minding my own legal tender? Or raise an Army?

@atomicpoet I'd see Apple encouraging the fediverse because they are not and don't want to be in the social space. But they have near peer competitors who are. So a healthy fediverse costs them nothing, and undermines the position of their competitors for talent. It is also aligned with their general privacy marketing to be on your own instances or a community not-adds based instance.

@kairyssdal I would have thought a few cannon rounds through the balloon wound have maybe resulted in a softer landing as it came down? You could have secured and studied the contents of the balloon.

@noeldemartin @deadsuperhero @smallcircles When I was working at Splunk we solved a similar problem of app permissions to data. When you created an app you had to grant access to what data it could see. Then a user accessing your that through that application could never exceed the app permissions, even if in another context they had full permissions to everything. So the app was a window to your data even if you owned the data you can only see so much of the data through the window.

Hey @lawfare , you don't have RSS on your new site. It's really kinda silly for all of the troubles you've had with the bird site to leave this out. Cc @benjaminwittes

Under rated fact, a surprising amount of clothing has a strong right hand bias. So many of the good pockets favor a right handed person. Zipper chest pockets, all on the left, a very nice pair of Lululemon 5 pocket pants have a lovely little pocket for keeping your phone, on the right side. I know that we lefties are only 15% of the population, but I want left handed pants.

Stories in bad graph making. #Oura ring shows you trends that are so small and poorly graphed you can't tell that anything changed, and is probably just statistical noise. Feels like a product management fail of giving the customer what they asked for, but not what they want or need. #productmanagement #PrdMgmt

It's also sad because they already have better graphs in the app for showing this data. Not setting your X axis to zero really makes the difference.

I am exactly the kind of person who doesn't normally have problems with abuse on #mastodon , I'm white and well off. But I sense this place becoming less vibrant because people are choosing bluesky or threads over #activitypub platforms.

I'd like to do something about that, but feel a little bit at a loss on how to help. I'm not a developer, I don't have a ton of time to try and contribute as a PM refining issues on open source projects.

I like what the open social web has to offer technically, but that only counts if there are people here to be social with. #opensocialweb

Should we have ActivityPub's big relay era? I think about what distinguishes Bluesky and ActivityPub. 1. Trust and Safety - ActivityPub and Mastodon need to do more here.2. A big relay - The distinguishing feature of BS is that every one is on a common relay, even if you are hosting your own data. This big relay helps to solve a lot of discoverability challenges that plague ActivityPub ecosystems.#Activitypub #bluesky #atprotocol

What if rather than the Mastodon core team running the central instance they ran a central relay and it was easier to start small instances that were easier to moderate?

Prediction.* Elon's Twitter goes bankrupt. * Jack is roped into running it again somehow. * He adds ActivityPub support and auto subscribes everyone to the federated addresses left in their profiles. * Twitter competes as an ad supported fediverse instance and has to win by providing the best user experience. * They save tons of money on moderation w/ newfound freedom to kick people off their instance because you can tell folks to go join an instance willing to put up with their shit.

This week will be amazing for my #stoic practice. 10 days of telling myself that I'm not going to worry about things I can't control (the election), that I've done what I can (vote and donate).I can meditate on and mentally reverse my actions and reactions to bad out comes (Trump winning)

@52fighters I respect and appreciate that you aren't voting for Trump. He's a clear and present danger to our nation. Consider voting for Harris, even if you don't agree with all of her policy, she will be a president that respects our democracy. A write in a not voting the top of the ticket doesn't help him get ahead but doesn't stop his progress.
