@simon Yeah, the Common Crawl cited along C4 is quite suspicious, especially if Common Crawl is there several times. The T5 paper that introduced C4 actually demonstrated that C4 was better than the uncleaned Common Crawl - something that LLaMA paper never even mentions, let alone addresses.

@simon I would be very surprised if they didn't use their input/output threads for creating conversational conversion datasets after some filtering. Currently models are more limited by good data than anything and further pretraining models on datasets that are closer to intended applications are definitely a way to achieve it.

@steventdennis If my memory is correct most journalists arrived on Twitter during or after the Arab Spring in 2011. Back in 2008-2010 it was not uncommon to see threads of binary blobs that were used as part of custom persistent communication protocols, treating the Twitter infrastructure as a convenient pipe.

@EvilCartyen @kravietz they found a loophole where they let you unsubscribe from diffusion lists, but then every 6 months they add a new one, you need to unsubscribe from as well.

@ZachWeinersmith who would want that? Insane rents not only generate quasi-guaranteed revenues compared to anything else, they also drive the property value up. Due to how it grew, a lot of people’s retirements depend on it, and depend on it keeping growing.

@interfluidity my point is that if they are willing to accept an entity fully based in and controlled by a stated adversary, I doubt the supply chain concern are sufficient to trigger action about an eccentric and loud, but in the end domestic and domestic-quasimonopoly-providing CEO.

@jonny last time around (2017) https://github.com/datarefuge was coordinating a lot of archiving. Realistically, the Climate data was pulled first, shortly followed by everything on NSF/NIH related to health, drug trials, public health, gun violence, crime statistics and anything that could be used to fact-check the narrative of the elected candidate.

@interfluidity fun fact, but that’s the argument that back in 2017, on Twitter, got me to scale the antivax pyramid scheme all the way to Wakefield. That and calling them out for selling alternative cures.

@interfluidity China? Project? Pretty much everyone with a minimal knowledge of history are expecting the US to perform a CRUD that will make collapse of the USSR look like a boyscout party. In the same way that despite all the blame on the US USSR folded all by itself, US is folding by itself as well, and has been, with pretty much no return chance since at least 2010.
