There's a new "experimental feature" being tested in Firefox 83: sponsored sites in the URL bar."Mozilla works with advertising partners to place sponsored tiles on the Firefox home page (or New Tab) that would be useful to Firefox users. Mozilla is paid when users click on sponsored tiles."https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/sponsor-privacyYou can disable this by setting `browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.showSponsoredTopSites` to `false`.Found via https://old.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/jybx2w/uh_why_is_firefox_showing_me_sponsored_links_in/#privacy

"When you click on a sponsored tile, Firefox sends anonymized technical data to our partner (https://www.admarketplace.com) through a Mozilla-owned proxy service (https://github.com/mozilla-services/topsites-proxy). This data does not include any personally identifying information and is only shared when you click on a Sponsored Top Site."#Privacy

@mnw yeah, confusingly the support page doesn’t mention the URL bar but the Reddit author shows sponsored sites do appear there 🤔

Just discovered RSS-Bridge; really helpful, open-source project.https://github.com/RSS-Bridge/rss-bridgeFor instance Mozilla doesn't provide a feed for their security advisories page (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/security/advisories/) but rss-bridge does (https://github.com/RSS-Bridge/rss-bridge/blob/master/bridges/MozillaSecurityBridge.php) 👍🏼 @amolith and @snopyta both run public instances too.- NixNet: https://rss.nixnet.services- Snopyta: https://rss-bridge.snopyta.org/#privacy

Very cool -- https://teddit.net is a new privacy-friendly Reddit frontend, similar to Invidious / YouTube, Bibliogram / Instagram, and Nitter / Twitter.Source code: https://codeberg.org/teddit/teddit- No JavaScript or ads- All requests go through the backend, client never talks to Reddit- Prevents Reddit from tracking your IP or JavaScript fingerprint- Lightweight (teddit frontpage: ~30 HTTP requests with ~270 KB of data downloaded vs. Reddit frontpage: ~190 requests with ~24 MB)#Privacy

ProtonVPN on Testflight now has a “NetShield” feature. Free version can block malware, paid subscription supports ad and tracker blocking too. Interested to learn what filter lists it uses 🤔https://testflight.apple.com/join/3yl2MSbw#Privacy

Proton's blog posts [1] [2] don't state details on the filter lists being used, only that it's a "massive database of sites known to host malware, spyware, or any other malicious software."But it looks like they mentioned on Reddit [3], "We have both public and proprietary lists that we maintain." 😕[1] https://protonvpn.com/blog/netshield-ad-blocker/[2] https://protonvpn.com/support/netshield/[3] https://teddit.net/r/ProtonVPN/comments/kwb7pf/what_is_the_sources_of_dns_filtering_for/gj7ocwo/#c#Privacy

Would be insightful for someone to conduct tests against bad sites [1] across security-focused DNS resolvers from Proton, Quad9, CleanBrowsing, Cloudflare, and CIRA Canadian Shield to see which comes out on top. Per site testing against some resolvers can also be conveniently done via https://dnsblacklist.org by CleanBrowsing.[1] https://github.com/nextdns/metadata/blob/master/security/threat-intelligence-feeds.json

Interesting.. The search engine selection preconfigured in Ghostery's upcoming browser (based on Firefox) includes a new one called Tailcat, "The open, unbiased search engine." No privacy policy or about page yet that I can find - just that it's based in Munich, Barcelona 🤔 https://meow.tailcat.comhttps://github.com/ghostery/user-agent-desktop#Privacy

FYI Mozilla / Firefox shares user data with Google, Leanplum, and Adjust [1] by default except on Klar [2] [3]. Learn how to opt-out here [4]. Also doesn't hurt to search for "telemetry" in `about:config` (not available on Firefox iOS) and toggle the entries to `false`.[1] https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/products/privacy-and-security/no-surprises[2] https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/send-usage-data-firefox-mobile-browsers#w_why-do-you-enable-data-collection-by-default[3] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefox_Focus#Firefox_Klar[4] https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/send-usage-data-firefox-mobile-browsers#w_how-do-i-turn-off-data-collection-and-reporting#Privacy
