I enjoy using lesser known, but more elegant, powerful, cleaner versions of popular tools, especially CLI tools. Things like tmux instead of screen, htop instead of top, doas instead of sudo. Got any favorites like this?

@elb @millihertz Didn't see this thread at first (my client didn't show me as I was replying) and I think it's hilarious that we all came to the same conclusion that it was TOPS. Absolutely not surprised that it came from IBM, though. Eugh.

@millihertz @elb And then the 80s happened and it's been MS ever since. -_-

I feel like my computing formative years were robbed from me because of the ineptitude of MS. The most egregious thing, I think, is the lack of memory protection. Sure, treat your computer like it's a microcontroller, just write whatever address you want, it'll be *fine*!

Has anyone else just looked through a #DnD or similar book just because you enjoy the worlds described, not because you're researching anything?

I'd like to get into graphic novels as a medium, but it seems so many of them do this thing where they bold words in every panel and it completely ruins my enjoyment of the medium. It's *like* they *think* I *can't* place *stress* by *myself* based *on* normal *speaking* patterns *and* it *drives* me *crazy*

I'm actually pretty pleased with and proud of the wordwise iambic meter of that rant. It's funny (at least to me) and it illustrates (exaggerated, slightly) my point really well, and it's deliciously meta.

@vaartis @siina I would disagree that ZFS isn't needed for a desktop. ZFS is needed *more* for desktops because desktop drives are awful lying pieces of shit and you need ZFS to protect you from their awful behavior. Enterprise drives aren't much better, of course, but desktop drives are worse. Try it, if you can spare the memory for it.

@soft I voted no because "lifestyle kink" to me is things like a 24/7 master/submissive relationship and that's not at all what I want. Not sure how else you could mean it, would appreciate clarification

I have found the most British source file in all of open source: xiph/opus-tools/src/opusinfo.c. Several of the functions start with "oi". Clearly British.

Reading about #KDE apps like Konversation getting a rewrite using Kirigami and seeing a number of other apps adopt this kind of UI and... I'm worried. I don't want a mobile-first UI on my desktop. Is this where KDE is going? I don't want another GNOME. If I wanted to use GNOME I would. I want more functionality and features. Kirigami apps provide neither.

I'm especially wary of how JavaScript seems to be the primary language for Qt Quick. I REALLY don't want JavaScript to be the primary application all my apps use. The entire point of using rich native apps is to *avoid* JS. This seems to be the way things are going, though, and... sigh. I cannot fathom why. Sure, C++ is awful, but Electron is worse. :(

@wolf480pl @lynne We had hypervisors in 1972 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logical_partition). And furthermore, just because a project did something a certain way 30 years ago it does not, in any way, mean that it needs to keep doing things that way today.Wine might be providing the Windows API but subscribing to the MS model of software is unwise.

@ParadeGrotesque It'd be perfect, but capitalism. Oh, and republicans, who are the evangelists of the almighty dollar.

Protip to drivers everywhere: honking your horn for 60 seconds has no greater chance of achieving what you want than honking for 5 seconds or even a fraction of a second. All you're accomplishing is showing that you're unable to manage your anger while in control of a dangerous metal machine.
