this is graffiti in an artist live-work warehouse. many of the artists here have very low wages and need space + low rent to work on their art/music/etc but were hit hard by gentrification. the unit I lived in earlier had to implement a "must use studio for art" rule because as alluring as it is for techies to move into the hip cool cheap alternative living space, if you push out all the artists, it is no longer hip, cool, cheap, or really anything except nasty

the most annoying scenarios were when someone moves into the warehouse and then proceeds to complain about the leaky roof, no air conditioning, no candles allowed because everything is flammable, constant thievery, homeless encampments next door, heroin needles and poop on the ground, and non-standard architecture. why even come here if you need the comforts of middle class white collars?

@futurebird I have done scientific illustrations in the past and the amount of AI crap flooding the net is absolutely a problem. Even my cohorts in biotech will post this kind of stuff on LinkedIn and it's really demoralizing! Why are they okay with inaccurate images in their own field? Apparently I could have just drawn any old crap and gotten paid for it, biology degrees be damned.

TIL most jalapenos in US stores have been genetically engineered to be less spicy. The imported asian and hispanic stores are more likely to have the regular ones. Guess that explains why some jalapenos are weaksauce and others actually taste like something.

@futurebird The Heritage Foundation, which had a hand in Project 2025, wants to make porn illegal and then categorize lgbt people and topics as "pornographic." Collective Shout has been hounding payment processors to ban porn and it's been affecting lgbt content, survivorship stories, sex education, and a range of other things. Age verification laws usually get pushed by religious right politicians.So, basically they just want Hays Code/Comics Code Authority to make a return.

@futurebird lack of affordable/appropriate 3rd spaces to meet new people with the primary aim of dating. Pubs and clubs are not appealing to me. Dating apps are largely terrible because they all prioritize user engagement (flipping through profiles and ads one at a time) instead of matching people. My life is currently work, work, work, come home and collapse on the bed. Weekends: chores and run errands.

@futurebird i really dislike accelerationists because things have been way, WAY worse in history before this, and things are already bad in many strata of society, if you look globally. if anything I'd say the opposite of accelerationism is true--if people are empowered to enact change or resist oppression they will do so more readily and more boldly.

@futurebird dunno about cheating specifically since I tune out gossip about the personal lives of famous people. But my impression is that right wingers will "care" about the personal failings of a leftist politician so that they can lord it over leftists, but they shrug it off when it happens on their side. It's the same as when they "care" about women's sports, bathroom safety, unborn children, child sex trafficking, etc where women & children are just a wedge to use for attacking other groups
