Here's a dev preview of the new website for @RedactedLife. It's still far from finished but the backend work is done and all that's left is tweaking the main website; I hired a friend of mine to create everything so I get to just tell him what to change instead of spending hours figuring out how to do it myself :blobhappy: https://redacted.life#RedactedLife

@kev Our reasoning is exactly the same; I don't like Nextcloud because it feels like they do a bad job at everything rather than a good job at a few things. I much prefer using individual pieces of software meant for a single task like Seafile for file syncing, Radicale for Cal/CardDAV, any IM service to replace that, etc.

@rysiek A really good A/V teleconferencing tool is #BigBlueButton.https://bigbluebutton.orgIt's open source, selfhostable, and, while primarily targeting education, works *incredibly* well for other situations

@caltlgin You can say that again. Radicale is really nice but it's missing some important features I want (integration with existing email server) so I switched to sabre/dav.https://sabre.io/dav/aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa it's a pain in the ass

@caltlgin That is very true ๐Ÿค” I'm curious now what the easiest service I've set up was. The hardest was definitely email

@caltlgin The simple ones like RSS-Bridge aren't bad but I've been procrastinating on upgrading ejabberd for a *long* time because I don't even remember how I installed it and there are over 250 accounts :blob_dizzy_face: Using UptimeRobot for monitoring was a huge help because that's one thing I don't have to worry about and it notifies me when there are issues with other services. I really need *better* monitoring with Prometheus and Grafana though. They've been on my todo list for a while

@theprivacyfoundation Off the top of my head, @aral is a good account to follow as well as @selea, @perflyst, and @caltlgin As his bio says, Aral is a "cyborg rights activist" and does a *lot* of work towards furthering privacy in this age of surveillance capitalism.Selea, Perflyst, and Caltlgin are all members of the #librehosters network (as am I) and we host web services for anyone to use free of charge. I think I speak for all of us when I say that digital privacy is something we care deeply about and we're trying to do our part to improve that for as many people as possible ๐Ÿ™‚

@nebunez It sound as all of your organisations have already made their choices but I'm going to throw #BigBlueButton out there anyway ๐Ÿ˜‰ https://bigbluebutton.orgIntended for educational institutions, it's absolutely fantastic for general remote collaboration and even has the "break out room" feature @Greg mentioned.@Gina @rumblestiltskin @cwebber

If I can swing it, I think I'll set my Mastodon instance up on a new domain tomorrow. I'll have to do some testing beforehand to see how much will break in the process. I'd really rather not run two instances but I also want to make sure my users have the chance to migrate so I'll leave both up for a month or so.

Hmm NPM merging with GitHub . . . sounds to me like Microshit is going back to their tactics of embracing a tech, extending it, and then extinguishing it :thonking: There's already a GitHub Package Registry. What would they gain by absorbing NPM if not the eventual migration to their own thing
