@DXMacGuffin @ralf_muschall @48kRAM Or the websites could simply decide to abide by the Do Not Track HTTP header and auto-disable nonessential cookies for those who have it enabled, without showing annoying cookie banners - I even know one or two sites who do it that way. The problem is that the ad/tracking industry is hellbent on making it as inconvenient as possible to refuse cookies, so most sites won't do that. We could simply require by law that websites listen to the DNT header though.

@olmitch @xenosaga i once threw up in the bathroom because of sleep deprivation and was convinced that it was because dynamic linking errors were occurring in my brain. ten minutes later, i realised that my brain wasn't running a unixoid os.

Just istalled #Phosh on my #NixOS Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet X1. I previously tried GNOME, but its touchscreen support is still shaky. Phosh, on the other hand, works perfectly fine for me in both tablet and laptop mode! Thanks @purism !! :blobcatspace:

To be honest, I am sort of disillusioned by the Fediverse when it comes to political discourse.Don't get me wrong - I love being on a social media platform that's independent of the US megacorps, ad and tracker free and with a lot better moderation. Even the lack of algorithmic timelines (which I initially perceived as a disadvantage) turned out to be really nice, as it puts me into control of what I want to see. After all, the mainstream social media algorithms are known to promote 1/?

extremist, polarising, and ill-informed content of all sides because it drives up engagement best. When joining fedi, I was hoping to see the exact opposite. Instead of the ultra-polarized echo-chambers of Reddit or Twitter, I was expecting a place where people with different political beliefs calmly sit down at a table, exchange arguments in good faith, and try to find the best solution for a given problem together. That was incredibly naïve of me. 2/?

The laws of attention economy still apply on here, after all. Even though there are no algorithmic feeds to boost polarising content beyond reason, it's still what generates the most attention and engagement. The echo chamber problem is further aggravated by the mechanism of selective defederation. All of this with the result that in the politically interested segment of fedi, extremism and polarisation prevails just as everywhere else. 3/?

I am starting to think that this is just the fundamental consequence of combining human behavioural psychology with the concept of social networks. Humans are not natural scientific thinkers. Writing has existed for over 4 millennia, but science only for little more than 3 centuries. The ability to engage in scientific, unemotional and differentiated discourse is something that needs to be trained from an early age on. I won't pretend that I'm better than everyone else here. I've been on 4/?

other social platforms in the past, and I'm just as guilty of contributing to polarized discourse as everyone else.Political populism and extremism is as old as democracy itself. But social media has enourmosly aggravated that problem. It has started a destructive cycle of accelerating, radicalising and transforming discourse beyond recognition. Taking a step back, I think it's crystal clear that the current tide of right-wing extremist parties gaining ground in western democracies is 5/?

directly caused by the rise in social media. If climate change does not destroy our civilisation, political extremism catalysed by social media will.I still love fedi though. What I've ended up doing is indiscriminately blocking and muting people who post about politics more than occasionally, and filters to get rid of topics that are notoriously polarized. This tide of ill-informed, emotional, polarized extremist content, combined with the fact that social media is the primary medium of 6/?

political information for a large part of the population is pure poison for our societies. We need to find a way to counteract it, before it comes down crashing on our heads. 7/7
