lots of discussion around the topic of #solarpunk on an HN post today.. interesting to see it come up with a more "broad" audience (in a relative sense), and how people interpret the term/concept https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24880745

New Rasperry Pi 400, a computer built into a keyboard! Funny, it’s like so many classic 8-bit-era computers in its form factor! Kinda nifty. https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/raspberry-pi-400-the-70-desktop-pc/

I've been researching more about open/free software and hardware because I knew this day would come. Fuck Apple, tbh."[Apple's new] machines are the first general purpose computers ever where you have to make an exclusive choice: you can have a fast and efficient machine, or you can have a private one.""Apple can, via these online certificate checks, prevent you from launching any app they (or their government) demands be censored."https://sneak.berlin/20201112/your-computer-isnt-yours/

@drwho @thegibson holy shit, that’s seriously messed up. the telecom industry urgently needs to put an end to caller ID spoofing.

@msh @ajroach42 @solderpunk I recently left a couple comments on a hacker news thread about exactly this. We have mind-bogglingly powerful CPUs that are being used to interpret 5mb of JS to send a message or read a chunk of text (news article, recipe, whatever). Such a total waste.

@paradroyd @xmanmonk ah yeah, the storage on mine got corrupted so I had to re-flash it. it seems like it will actually become corrupted over time no matter what, even if you’re not using it, if I understand correctly? I forget the type of memory offhand but it is super unreliable :(

@aral Hey dude I"m curious, what OS are you running on your computer? It's some linux variant, I guess? Could see it on the livestream, looks cool. I always ask people when they are not using Mac/Win as I am figuring out what to try out next... so tired of proprietary OS/software... 😩

@paradroyd @xmanmonk yeah NAND, that's it! and apparently it's a "bare" NAND so unless you have the device frequently running, it's guaranteed to get corrupted by the passage of time. Very sad, really compromises the awesomeness of the product IMO :( Otherwise, PocketCHIP is super cool!!

@mhoye @neauoire Just to be clear, this setting appears to be a group policy setting, like for work/school admins to disallow View Source on Chrome on their machine. It's not for any ol' website to block visitors from using View Source. Reading the source it does indeed look like policy setting and not a web API. Of course, I won't be surprised at all if it later ends up being a setting websites can use :PTweet from the submitter of the code review: https://twitter.com/ericlaw/status/1457884158391373833

https://tomasp.net/commodore64/The Lost Ways of Programming: Commodore 64 BASIC"When Commodore 64 starts, a welcome screen from BASIC awaits you. Even if you want to use it to just play games, you start with a programming environment. This tells you that you too can become a programmer and you certainly do not need to download gigabytes of tools and wait hours for your XCode or Visual Studio to install. "

#amateurRadio people: does anyone know a good logging software that runs on both linux and windows? especially one that can integrate with online services and show me which stations or grids I've already logged, etc... I checked HAMRS but didn't like it, and practically everything else seems to be Windows-only 🤔

Progress on my portable/offgrid #radio kit. #Yaesu FT-857D with #Armoloq pack frame, #Digirig for digital modes, and soon a 10ah LiFePo4 battery. Probably will use an old ThinkPad X230 for the computer side of things… maybe. Not the best power efficiency. Still need to decide on a bag, maybe PRC 117G pouch (molle ftw). Not to mention solar panels and a charge controller. Still considering options there as I of course want to support multiple loads (such as lights, computer charging, etc.)
