@BlackAzizAnansi it is driving me crazy. The strange looks I get when I wear masks. My refusal to eat indoors if outside is at all possible is met with confusion. My contacting event organizers to ask if events are indoors or outdoors is often met with complete hostility. Like 1,000+ people are still dying a week from COVID in the US- but sure why would we want to take basic precautions.

One of the reasons #IAC2023 was such a big deal for me was that I got to organize, facilitate, and speak at a Special Session (SpS) devoted entirely to #spacelaw. (Special Sessions provide a much larger stage than Technical Sessions or Interactive Presentations and there is a lot more opportunity to really deep dive into a topic.)#LawFedi #fedilaw 1/

I started out our SpS on the "Analysis of Due Diligence and Good Faith in Commercial Outer Space Activities” by giving a brief overview of the current state of the law of outer space. Some key takeaways were:🚀 The Outer Space Treaty establishes that space is to be treated as an international commons, similar to international waters. It does this by stating that “[o]uter space, including the moon and other celestial bodies, is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty.”2/

🚀 International space law is focused largely, if not exclusively, on nation controlled space exploration. From a jurisdictional and legal perspective, private and commercial actors do not exist in space.🚀 The lack of clear international legal rules and enforcement mechanisms, especially as to commercial space entities, puts the burden on private space actors to truly act with “due diligence” in all of their extraterrestrial activities.3/

RGOs allow for more adaptive rules and regulations, which can be created for specific and very focused issues. 🚀 RGOs can truly be multistakeholder, by involving as many interested parties as possible, including lower-level actors.5/

🚀 Throughout the Outer Space Treaty there is this clear sentiment that space is truly the one universal heritage of all of humankind and we are expected to act in good faith when exploring or extracting resources from space. And this is essentially what RGOs are all about, working together for everyone’s long-term benefit.7/
