@grammargirl Unfortunately, Elasticsearch is a resource hog, so many instances never enable it. That combined with the defederated nature of the platform does make search perhaps its greatest weakness.I've gotten in the habit of making use of the bookmark feature for anything of genuine interest. I almost never used it on Twitter. I found once I changed that habit, the weakness of the search function didn't trouble me as much.Hope you find a solution that works for you.

@stux There's one reason why I know humans will ultimately win the war against the machines, regardless of what kind of machines we're up against. We are quite adept at destruction. Physical robots? We'll gun down, blow up, etc. Programs? Oh, I just *know* the uber-nerds of the world will be ready to crack their knuckles, open some Mountain Dew, & say "It's time," Then proceed to break the shit out of the rogue software. @Elizafox Most issues in life present because of multiple simultaneous failures. That's why simple solutions rarely work. Most people seem to think everything is a simple cause & effect situation, forgetting that everything is deeply interconnected.It's like when your perfectly healthy city in Cities Skylines suddenly has a cascade failure. A whole lot of small unexpected things go wrong all at once & then it's disaster. Real life isn't much different.

@beaveinflow I am in a toxic relationship with parenthetical statements (at least I think I may be). It's not often a problem, (some find it annoying) but I'm learning to live with my limitations.

I wish people would stop using euphemisms & censoring of words to "protect" others, thus bypassing their muted words.This isn't Twitter. There isn't an algorithm to manipulate. More engagement does not work the way you think it does here. Using those kinds of shady Twitter tactics to try to expand your reach is a good way to censor yourself by way of muting, blocking, or in extreme cases, defederation of your instance.If you honestly want to protect others, please use content warnings.

@grammargirl Sadly, the rest of the entertainment industry taught many of us to never pre-order anything. I can only imagine the impact that's had on book sales.I quite love when my daughter gets all excited to preorder the next books from her favorite authors. I'm glad she still has that excitement.

@BarrenPlanet @nasa I'm not the best at math, but I suspect the expansion of the universe plays a role here. Though, it may be that it exploded 300+ years ago from our point of reference, but the true explosion was far longer ago & the headline is written that way for simplicity.That seems more likely, as I don't believe the universe is expanding quite that fast.

When I chose this country neighborhood 16 years ago, it was because I wanted to live in a place that's quiet & peaceful.Every year the landlord is constantly running chainsaws, dump trucks, lawn tractors, & other equipment because he's bored & those are his toys.One day I'll have my own land. Then maybe I'll finally know peace.

@BarrenPlanet It's a great feature for when someone I otherwise like is going through a mood.To add to this, I love profile notes. I leave them when I unfollow people, because my memory is terrible. Last person I unfollowed, the note was "Great guy. Noble interests. Simply not my people." This keeps me from repeatedly following people who I may respect but who I simply haven't developed a rapport here with.The social part of social media is important to me.

Do we have any leech experts on Mastodon? I'm looking into medicinal leeches, but the initial documentation is saying to never reuse them. This seems a bit cruel, even for an omnivore like me. I just need to lose 500ml to 1L of blood in total every month. Leeches seem like the best way to do this without buildup of scarring over time. I was considering a leech aquarium where I would be treating them like both treasured pets & medical assistants.Boosts or links to reliable info is appreciated.
