A Famous Person just asked in a toot what's on people's minds, and my first instinct was to reply "@aphyr's jockstrap selfies, @buttplugio, and furries."What has the Fedi done to me?(Whatever it did, I hope it keeps doing it, because this is funny, unexpected, and awesome, but also a bit of a "wtf brain, what about keyboards and lisp?"...)

Today I built my first no-OS, single-static-binary container, and it feels nice.

@wolf480pl No. Just a regular Linux container + a static ELF binary.

@wolf480pl Well, a kernel, yeah, but no OS beside it. Just not a specialized unikernel, but a generic one, so I can just docker run it.

@wolf480pl Sadly, no, not -ffreestanding, I have a good number of dependencies that require the Linux kernel (network stuff, openssl, and a bunch of other things). For debugging, I have logs, and I can run the same thing on the host with a debugger attached if I need to.

@wolf480pl Hm... you did pique my interest about unikernels, and Unikraft might be POSIX enough for my needs in this case. Going to take a look!(Though, I will continue to use the linux+single binary container, because I have the tooling setup for that, running unikernels would be a whole new thing.)

Mmnngh. I received a HDMI switch, but the stupid thing requires a DC 5v charger, the one we used for phones like a decade ago before USB chargers. I don't think I have any of those around anymore.Contemplating whether to order a charger (but this thing has 0 documentation, so I'm not exactly sure what kind of charger), or just a HDMI switch with better docs and USB charging - or one that comes with a charger.I hate hardware so much at times.

@joeld @jesse @evan You can have your instance wherever, and have @<user>@<name>.<tld> point there. For wherever, I'd go with something like fedi or social. Definitely not Mastodon (because if you ever change server software, you can't use Mastodon as the hostname due to its trademark), and not any other software name, either.

Phew. I have #PeerTube set up for a friend, and things are looking great. The one problem I need to solve is how to send a notification to #Discord (yes, discord, not my choice) when he goes live, either via #PeerTube itself, or via #OBS.

I found this gist so far, but it's 3 years old. Might still work, haven't tried yet.

Success! I have something that works. An OBS Python script that can send a message to a discord webhook! It currently shells out to curl, because requests for some reason fails to https in this context and I can't be bothered to figure out why.If anyone is interested in an #OBS script to ping #Discord, let me know, and I'll clean it up and publish it.

Hrm. Trying to follow an account on PeerTube from Mastodon doesn't seem to work. On the masto side, I see it pending, there are no notifications on the peertube side. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Eh, well, doesn't matter at the moment. Will deal with it some other time. The core functionality works, that's good enough. The rest can wait.

@Linux_in_a_Bit I tried @owncast, it was by far the easiest to set up, but it lacked a couple of things my friend wants, like storing the livestream automatically when the stream stops. If I wanted something that's stream-only, #OwnCast would be my #1 choice.I also couldn't get the discord notifications working there - haven't debugged it much, mind you, I just followed the docs, and the notification didn't appear on Discord, and I found nothing obvious in the Owncast logs either. I left it at that at that point, because this wasn't the most important thing.

@cwebber Maybe mention his Jet too? Unrelated to the policy, but it seems to be something he's very unhappy about.

I'm looking for a home #router, preferably one I can put some open source firmware on (#OpenWRT, or whatever the best is at the moment), because my Asus RT-N12+ is not well supported (its still running the latest factory firmware for that reason), and for the past week or so, I get disconnected, and have to manually reconnect every 15 minutes, and it's driving me crazy.I'm mostly looking for a wired router, wireless is nice, but optional (I have a separate wireless router in the living room, which is working fine). I need at least 3 LAN ports, but could do with 4-5.Also looking for something I can buy locally in Hungary, without having to order from Ebay or Amazon, so... something off the shelf. And not super expensive...Recommendations and boosts would be most appreciated, I am not good at picking my hardware (except my keyboards, I'm good at that). :(

@a I do. Explicitly set to black (not completely black, mind you, but dark enough that it passes for black), because most of my stuff uses light mode, and when I go into Overview, a dark, black background gives a nice contrast. But then, that's the only time I ever see my background.

@b0rk It gets out of my way, and with automatic updates enabled, I hardly ever need to care about it. It Just Works. It doesn't try to shove ads down my throat, it doesn't try to second guess me, it doesn't collect everything I do to send it back home, it doesn't try to convince me that XYZ is the Next Best Thing Ever and I will need to use it, it doesn't try to move itself to The Cloud. It just works, and stays out of my way, so I can focus on what's really important: customising my Emacs in peace.
